history

The Visigoths conquered Aquitaine and settled there until the 6th century. Canenx was undoubtedly occupied by them during this period. The village subsequently developed around a castle high above the Douze valley. François de Lassalle, Lieutenant General of Marsan, bought in 1642, the basic rule about the feud Canenx and caching of the Poor Clares of Mont-de-Marsan, 1643, he was Mitgrundherr of Roquefort . In the course of the reorganization of the territories at the beginning of the French Revolution , the previously separate municipalities of Canenx and Réaut merged to form the new municipality of Canenx-et-Réaut. Up until the Second German Empire , the community lived from raising cattle. Then the government decided to drain the lands and work the land by planting pine trees. This resulted in an economic boom in the region and fundamentally changed the landscape. From then on, forestry supplied resin and wood for the pillars of the mines and the railroad. Mobile sawmills were even used in Canenx-et-Réaut.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to around 520 levels by the middle of the 19th century, which was maintained until the beginning of the 20th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to around 110 inhabitants during short recovery phases until the 1980s, before a phase of growth began that has recently declined again.

Parish Church of Saint-Saturnin in Canenx

It is dedicated to Saturninus of Toulouse , the first bishop of Toulouse . Of the Romanesque church built in the 11th or 12th century, the main nave and above all the semicircular apse with small, regular quarry stone have survived the centuries. Originally, a narrow window in the buttress along the longitudinal axis let light into the choir . The north aisle and the bell tower were added in the Gothic style, probably in the 15th century. The small vestibule to the west and the sacristy are modern additions, and the windows were enlarged or added in the 19th century, possibly at the same time as the restoration in 1856. The bell tower towers between the small vestibule and the long building. The main nave, three bays long, opens to the side aisle of the same length via arched arcades . The building is tiled with the exception of the tower , whose tent roof is covered with slate . The ceiling of the nave is a paneling made of plaster.

Four stained glass windows are works by the glass painter Louis-Victor Gesta from Toulouse , created in the second half of the 19th century. They show geometric motifs, quatrains and rhombuses, surrounded by polychrome plant tendrils on a red or blue background. A medallion on the upper area frames a symbolic motif in a golden halo:

After a restoration in 1980, the first-mentioned window was reversed and the painted side has been facing outwards ever since.

The church has only been able to preserve a few items from before the French Revolution . These include the wings and columns of the tabernacle from the late 17th century and the reredos of the main altar from the years 1730–1750. A set of silver chalices and paten from the time of Louis XIV was donated by a member of the Lassalle family after 1642. It has been classified as a Monument historique since June 24, 2003 . The pulpit has a sober diamond decoration and dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. Most of the interior was renewed during the 19th century. These and many other items of equipment are registered as national cultural assets.

It used to be dedicated to Medardus of Noyon , today to the Archangel Michael . She was originally a hospital assigned, which was mentioned in the records in 1147 and subsequently the Priory of Bougue shelter, which was founded 1324th The semicircular apse made of small, regular quarry stone probably dates from this period. The semicircular floor plan of the nave could be an indication of a change in orientation , although it is unclear when and for what reason it took place. The bell tower, also made of small, regular masonry , was built or redesigned in the 14th century. At that time it received its fortification for the purpose of military defense. The vestibule and sacristy, which are attached to the church on either side of the apse, were extensions in the 17th or 18th century. On the keystone of the western entrance, the noun sacrum IHS and a damaged date that ends in "..75" and probably reads "1675" are engraved.

The choir opens to the single nave nave via a triumphal arch , a slightly flattened round arch. The base of the boiler vault is emphasized by a rounded band. Today's furnishings in the church are no older than the mid-19th century, with the exception of the seat for the priest celebrating mass , which dates from the end of the 17th or 18th century. These and other furnishings of the church are registered as national cultural assets.
