history

Originally the manor of Campet belonged to the Estang family from the village of the same name in what is now the Gers department . In 1200 the landlord of Campet took part in the cour dels Sers , a court of justice of the Vicomté of Marsan, whose seat was in Bascons . The landlords have been mentioned several times in connection with a homage to the English king, who was also Duke of Gascony at the same time . In the 14th century the old motte was converted into a castle. In 1430 the manor was handed over to the Lyon family. As part of the Huguenot Wars , numerous buildings in the village, including the castle, were looted and set on fire in the 16th century. A century later the village suffered again from the confusion of the Fronde . In 1731 the property of the Lyon family was raised to margraviate .

Between 1790 and 1794, the commune of Sainte-Croix was incorporated. The community was temporarily called Campet et Sainte Croix . In 1823 the municipality of Lamolère was incorporated and the municipality has had its current name ever since.

Attractions

Parish church of Sainte-Croix in Campet
  • Parish Church in Campet. dedicated to the finding of the cross . From the original church, the nave with a width of approx. 6.5 m, with a length of 13 m and a height of 9 m and the Romanesque apse the same width as the nave have survived through the centuries. Two small buttresses took the pressure of the vault of the apse and two more the triumphal arch in the choir . The outer walls of the apse are free of embellishments on the outside, but very decorated on the inside. A row of arches with sculpted capitals resting on a bench surrounds the semicircle below a scroll frieze. Another panel of the same type can be seen at the entrance of the apse dome , and the triumphal arch rests on columns with capitals also modeled. All of these elements underwent a radical restoration in the 19th century, with the result that the original shapes of the decorations are sometimes difficult to recognize due to the overmolding. In the 16th or 17th century, a side chapel was added to the south , which opens to the nave via a row of arcades. An aedicula a little more than 3 m × 3 m in size leans against this chapel and the southern wall of the nave. A window gives light to the baptismal font in the aedicule. The dating to a year after 1755 is plausible because the baptismal font was in the nave itself until this date. The vestry adjoins the north side of the apse . Before the extensive reconstruction according to plans by the architect Ozanne in the 19th century, the building was extended to the west by a two-storey residential wing, the ground floor of which formed a [portal] open to the north and south. Today's east facade reflects different styles. The porch and high windows above the entrance are inspired by the Romanesque, while the window with a quatrefoil on the pediment and the pinnacles on the side buttresses add a Gothic touch. The gable is higher than the roof of the nave and relieves the quatrefoil of the function of lighting. The style of the sculptures in the vestibule suggests that the facade was changed after the demolition of the former rectory, presumably at the end of the 19th century. The capitals illustrate the symbols of the Eucharist , grapes and chalices , wheat and ciborium , as well as a squirrel and lions holding a blank coat of arms, which probably used to bear the coat of arms of the Lyon family. The tympanum of the entrance shows a bust depicting the good shepherd . Most of the furnishings date from the 19th century, with the exception of a set of gilded wood candlesticks and a painting depicting the Descent from the Cross from the 18th century. The chandelier has the shape of an iris and dates from the time of the Restoration . The only decorated glass window was inserted in the longitudinal axis in the apse and shows the motif of the finding of the cross.

It has two arched wall openings for the bells and a high blind arcade frames the entrance. The nave is illuminated by wide windows, the semicircular apse is flanked on the north side by an extension. The building is built with irregular quarry stone and plastered with lime and covered with hollow bricks.

A long avenue leads to the castle, which was built in the 17th century on a terrace overlooking the Geloux valley on the remains of the castle that was destroyed in the Huguenot Wars. His withdrawn residential wing is framed by two pavilions . The castle is privately owned and is not open to the public.
