Morcenx ( Gascon Morcens ) is a village and a former French commune with last 4,397 inhabitants (2016) in the department of land in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . Morcenx belonged to the arrondissement of Mont-de-Marsan and the canton of Pays Morcenais Tarusate . The inhabitants are called Morcenais (es) .
The decree of November 16, 2018 established the incorporation of Morcenx together with the former municipalities of Arjuzanx , Garrosse and Sindères into the Commune nouvelle Morcenx-la-Nouvelle with effect from January 1, 2019 . In contrast to the other former municipalities, Morcenx was not a commune déléguée . The administrative headquarters are in Morcenx.
geography
Morcenx is located about 37 km northwest of Mont-de-Marsan in the historic province of Gascony . The place is in the Forêt des Landes ( Grande-Landes ) on the river Bès , a right tributary of the Midouze .

history
The name Morcenx is borrowed from the Latin Mauritius . The church of Morcenx was mentioned in the Liber rubeus as early as the 12th century . In 1467 the Order of St. John acquired large tracts of land and set up a command post here.
Population development
The population rose from the beginning of records to a peak of 5,690 by the 1970s. As a result, there was an overall downward trend up to the merger to form Commune nouvelle.
