Parish church of Sainte-Quitterie

Parish church of Sainte-Quitterie

The church, consecrated to St. Quiteria, was built on a site whose long existence is proven by the discovery of several sarcophagi from the Merovingian period next to the apse . Originally it belonged to a monastery of the Order of the Premonstratensians from the Abbey of Saint-Jean de la Castelle. From the Romanesque building from the 11th century, the semicircular apse and the nave made of small masonry have outlasted the centuries. The apse is supported by three flat buttresses , the one on the central axis being interrupted by a window. During the Gothic period , two aisles were added, probably in the 14th century , which are connected to the main aisle by large arched arcades . The fortified bell tower has cliff watch towers on consoles on its north and south sides , which were probably erected at the same time. The church received some restorations after the devastation and looting by Protestant troops under the leadership of Captain Thoiras as part of the Huguenot Wars in 1569. In the 19th century a porch was built to the west, enclosing the base of the bell tower, and on both sides of the Each choir has a sacristy . The bell tower is provided with a tent roof which, like the entire building, is covered with hollow tiles.

Some furnishings , most of which have been heavily revised, date from the Ancien Régimes . The oldest is a statue of St. Quiteria, the patron saint of the church. The figure made of oak comes from the 14th or 15th century. She has put on a flower crown and wears a long coat with folds. In her right hand she holds her half-severed head and in her left a closed book. A chain that reaches the floor is also attached to her left hand. The picture was certainly polychrome in its original state , but the paint was removed and the wood was waxed. The furnishings of the choir and the main altar are made up of elements from the 17th century (door, columns and statuettes of the tabernacle ), the mid-18th century (frame painting of the altarpiece , paneling and benches of the choir), the Restoration period (painting of the saints Quiteria of the retable) and the mid-19th century (altar table). The side altar in the north aisle, which is dedicated to Saints Blasius of Sebaste and Remigius, is also heterogeneous, while the side altar in the south aisle is a classicist work from the first half of the 19th century. The rest of the furniture was acquired from the second half of the 19th century. Some stained glass windows with geometric motifs are works by the glass painter Gustave Pierre Dagrant from Bordeaux , which were created in the aisles in 1882 and in the choir after 1915. Another two glass windows were ordered in January 1939 from the successors of the founder of the Dagrant house. They show Saint Blaise as a bishop with a miter , crook and martyr's palm and Quiteria with a crown, book, lily, palm and sword. The described and many other items of equipment of the church are registered as national cultural assets.
