    • the Ruisseau de Hartaou, which rises in Arthez-d'Armagnac.

history

For strategic, political, economic and demographic reasons, bastids like Arthez-d'Armagnac were built in the Landes in the 13th and 14th centuries in connection with the rivalry between the Kingdom of England and the French territories . The community was founded in 1319 as an act of paragium between Jeanne d'Artois and the landlord Arnaud d'Ognoas. Jeanne offers protection and Arnaud his property, the income of which was divided between the two landlords. Like numerous other bastides in the southwest, Arthez-d'Armagnac also suffered from the consequences of the Hundred Years' War and the Huguenot Wars .

Population development

After a peak in the number of inhabitants of around 495 in the first half of the 19th century, the number fell to around 95 after several brief recovery phases by the 1990s, before the size of the community increased moderately.

Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to John the Baptist . It was built when the bastide was founded in the 14th century. The bell tower of brick was added in the 15th century. Based on traces of loopholes and other openings, it can be assumed that it also served as a watchtower. Wall paintings from the 14th and 16th centuries cover the northern walls inside. After the Huguenot Wars, which particularly affected the churches in the country in the 16th century, a broad phase of reconstruction began. From the 17th century onwards, the focus was on beautifying the church buildings, especially with regard to the entrance portals . The parish church of Arthez-d'Armagnac was able to keep the wooden doors of the portal from the 18th century. On the upper part of the left wing, John the Baptist is depicted holding a stick. A lamb at his feet refers to the day he baptized Jesus after calling him the Lamb of God . On the upper part of the right wing of the door, an unidentified saint is depicted wearing a miter and holding a double cross. On the middle part of the wings, lion heads protrude, holding a ring in their mouth with which the wings can be raised. This type of door leaf production can be found in around twenty churches around Mont-de-Marsan. At the beginning of the 19th century there was a lack of money to maintain and repair the church. Her condition worsened and she was considered too small in view of the growing population. But Jacques Taurin Lormand, landlord of Ognoas and Tampouy, contributed part of his fortune to the extension of the church building. The work was carried out between 1855 and 1858. The church was raised by three meters, the southern and eastern outer walls were renewed and the choir was built with a ribbed vault made of bricks. A sacristy was also added around the apse . In the 19th century, the entrance porch was raised by one storey, which now houses the town hall. With the first laws of the Second French Republic , the French municipalities had to set up their town halls. As in this case, an existing building was often preferred to an expensive new one for financial reasons. The choir of the church was equipped with a main altar made of white marble and ornaments with gold plating. In 1995 restoration work was carried out during which the frescoes from the 14th and 16th centuries were exposed.
Ognoas estate
Alambic
  • Ognoas estate. The manor of Ognoas was probably founded at the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century. A permanent house for security should exist from now on. The name Ognoas was first mentioned in 1262 with the landlord Arnaud Bosquet d'Ognoas. The manorial rule came into the hands of several families, from 1371 to the early 17th century the Aydie family, then Dufourcq and Filhot. At the end of the 15th or the beginning of the 16th century the house was redesigned. Perhaps a rear wing was added and at the same time a stair tower at one corner of the residential wing , remains of which can still be seen today. The middle-class Lormand family from Bayonne owned the manor from 1770 to 1847, when Jacques Taurin Lormand died without heirs. The seminary of the diocese of Aire-sur-l'Adour inherited the property, which in 1905 had to transfer its properties to the département with the law on the separation of church and state. The property fell into disrepair, deteriorated or fell into disrepair when the department's agricultural services launched a building repair program in 1940. The previous building was integrated into a new building. In 1986 the architect Annie Lardière-Dupouy carried out a complete renovation. A risalit was added in the middle of the front facade, the window openings were given a symmetry and the interior of the ground floor was changed. In the northern wing of the building, the front facade of the liquor store was restored and the distillery room redesigned. The elongated building south of the residential wing, called the Bishop's House , was built in the late 19th century. The estate now extends over 650 hectares in the areas of the municipalities of Arthez-d'Armagnac, Le Frêche, Lannemaignan and Villeneuve-de-Marsan. It houses an agricultural research facility and an alambic that has been in operation since 1830 and is one of the oldest in Gascon. Wine is grown on around 50 hectares, corn, soy and sunflowers on more than 100 hectares. The forest covers around 300 hectares and provides the raw material for the barrels for the Armagnac . The watermill de la Gaube and a liquor store are part of it. The mill is on the banks of the lake of the dormer. It is a two-story building. The submerged level is made of stone , the upper level is made of bricks and plastered. Two horizontally mounted water wheels are located under the mill. Former dairies on the property have been restored and are available for rent to guests. The Alambic has been classified as a Monument historique since October 20, 2006 . The estate can be visited with the distillery and the spirits can be tasted.
