history

Eugénie de Montijo (1826-1920)

The effectiveness of the water in Eugénie-les-Bains, which is rich in sulfur , sulphates and magnesium , was already known to the Romans and appreciated by Michel de Montaigne and Henry IV . The enthusiasm of the French Empress Eugénie over the "water of Saint-Loubouer" led in 1861 to the establishment of the own community Eugénie-les-Bains. A thermal bath was built and the first mayor Dubalen had a church built and a cemetery and the necessary roads laid out. After the Second World War , the activity experienced a certain decline until the construction of a new thermal bath in 1966. The thermal bath is now one of the most famous in France. Its water from two sources helps with disorders of urinary tract and intestinal functions, rheumatism and osteoarthritis . The diuretic and detoxifying properties of water help regulate metabolism , weight loss and cellulite . The municipality also benefited from the reputation of the Les Prés d'Eugénie restaurant by Michel Guérard , which to this day is awarded the highest award of three stars by the Michelin Guide every year . Michel Guérard is considered to be the inventor of nouvelle cuisine .

Eugénie-les-Bains owned a station on the railway line of the Compagnie des Tramways à Vapeur de la Chalosse et du Béarn , which connected Aire-sur-l'Adour with Amou and opened in 1909. In the 1930s, first the transport of people, later the freight traffic, was stopped due to a lack of economic efficiency.

Population development

After a population level of around 610 after the foundation of the community, the number fell to around 400 after several short recovery phases by the 1970s. This was followed by a period of growth up to the turn of the millennium to over 500 inhabitants, which subsequently stagnated to today's size of around 450 inhabitants.
