Parish Church of Saint-Sigismond

Bordères-et-Lamensans is a French municipality with 369 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of land in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Mont-de-Marsan and the canton of Adour Armagnac (until 2015: canton of Grenade-sur-l'Adour ).

The name Bordères is in the Gascognischen language Bordèras . It is a derivation of the word Bòrda ( German  farm ).

The inhabitants are called Bordériens and Bordériennes .

Bordères-et-Lamensans is located about 20 km southeast of Mont-de-Marsan in the Pays de Marsan region of the historic province of Gascony on the southeastern edge of the department.

Bordères-et-Lamensans lies in the catchment area of ​​the Adour River on its right bank. The Ruisseau de Gioulé and the Ruisseau de Laguibaou, two right tributaries of the Adour, flow into these on the territory of the municipality.

history

Empress Eugénie

Spearheads and spurs prove the existence of a camp in Gallo-Roman times . But the prominent position of the excavation area was achieved through the discovery of a coin treasure from the fourth century AD and jewelry. The recorded history of the two parishes of Bordères and Lamensans took place in 1141 with the first mention of an estate belonging to the landlord . In 1821 the two former communities merged. The parish once again achieved national attention when Empress Eugénie de Montijo had the parish church built in 1867 and 1868.

Population development

The population showed highs of around 610 in the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to around 290 inhabitants during short recovery phases up to the 1980s, before a moderate growth phase began that continues to this day.

Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to St. Sigismund . After the previous building was destroyed by a flood of the Adour, the French Empress had this church built between 1867 and 1868. A plaque on the wall of the apse commemorates this donation.
  • Chapel of Lamensans. It was originally built in the 12th century as a chapel by the lords of Lamensans on a hill above the Adour valley. It has been redesigned several times over the centuries. It was completely rebuilt in the 17th century with two small windows that illuminate the interior. A first expansion took place on the west side when a first bell gable was built, from which the entrance persists. The last enlargement took place in the 19th century when the southern side was widened, the building was raised as a whole and the roof turret was realigned. Inside the chapel, a liter funéraire from the 17th century, a mural painting from the 18th century, a painted coat of arms of the lord of Castandet and a painting with the patron saint of the chapel, St. Martin , who together with Mary at the foot of the Cross stands.
  • Marrast Castle. In the second half of the 19th century it belonged to Adolphe Marrast, a wealthy merchant and mayor of Mont-de-Marsan. After his death he bequeathed it to his wife's nephew and famous pianist Francis Planté . The rooms of the property, as well as the master bedroom, show a design that comes close to the original. The outdoor facilities, such as the park and its fountain or a plaque reminiscent of a deported resistance fighter, represent an interesting cultural heritage.

Economy and Infrastructure

The Bonduelle company has a vegetable preservation site in Bordères-et-Lamensans. An ambitious project to build a biogas plant , which u. a. the production waste from the Bonduelle factory was abandoned in 2017.

  • A medium circular route with a length of 8 km leads from Lamensans through the municipality and neighboring municipalities without any difference in altitude.
  • The L'Accalmie riding school in Bordères-et-Lamensans offers courses and rides specifically for western riding for adults and children aged four and over. The facility is also a breeding station for American Quarter Horses and a boarding house.
