Menachem Hacohen

Menachem Hacohen (born July 26, 1932 in Jerusalem ) is an Israeli rabbi , politician and writer .

In 1951 he began his military service in the Nachal Brigade . There he was chief editor of rabbinical publications until 1955. From 1952 to 1954 he was an officer in charge of religious ceremonies. In 1955 and 1956 HaCohen was a rabbi in the Israeli Navy . In 1967 he became rabbi of the Moshavim settler movement , and soon thereafter until 1979 rabbi of the Histadrut . In 1973, 1977, 1981 and 1984 he was elected to the Knesset as a member of the HaMa'arach Alliance . He lost his seat in the 1988 elections. Between 1997 and 2011 he was Chief Rabbi of Romanian Jewry. HaCohen is also involved in interreligious dialogue and works with the Elijah Interfaith Institute, which is sponsored by UNESCO . HaCohen has published a number of books such as The Stones Speak - History and Folklore about the Holy Places Liberated by the IDF , Book of the Life of Man - Weddings , Book of the Life of Man - Birth or The Belief of a Nation .
