Altmann Arigler
Altmann Arigler (also Arrigler ; baptismal name Franz Xaver , first name until joining the order Franz ; born November 6, 1768 in Kirchdorf an der Krems , † June 5, 1846 in Göttweig Abbey ) was an Austrian theologian , Benedictine abbot and university teacher .
Life
Arigler was the son of a master glazier . After completing high school studies, he went to the Linz Lyceum to study philosophy in 1786 , where he remained until 1788. In 1790 he entered the Benedictine Abbey of Göttweig . From there he went to the University of Vienna to study theology as a general seminarist in 1791 . He made his profession in 1792 and was ordained priest in 1793 . First he came to the University of Linz as a professor of the Old and New Testaments . In 1800 he was called back to the in-house teaching institute in Göttweig.
In 1806 Arigler accepted a call as a professor for Greek, New Testament and Exegesis at the University of Vienna and in 1808 became a full professor at the university. In 1810, with the dissertation Oratio academica habita ad initium anni scholastici 1809, the doctorate to Dr. theol. and thus the admission into the theological faculty with seat and vote.
Arigler was elected Abbot of Göttweig in 1812 and returned there as such. Through a clever administration of the monastery he was able to reduce the debts and partially renew the building fabric. Under his leadership, the new building of the Göttweigerhof in Vienna and the expansion of the Nalb priory came about . In 1813 he was given the title of Real Government Councilor by Emperor Franz I. At the same time he began to revive the church music of the monastery. In addition, one of his earnings was the home school, where he was a teacher himself, to open it to students from other monasteries. In addition, he became director of theological studies of the Lower Austrian Benedictines.
Arigler was elected prelate from 1818 to 1824, then he became a member of the Lower Austrian Estates College. Although the abbot became increasingly blind, he managed the monastery until his death. In 1843 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Leopold Order on the fiftieth anniversary of the priesthood .
