Franz Xaver Schweickhardt
Franz Xaver Joseph Schweickhardt (also called himself Franz Xavier Ritter von Sickingen or Franz Schweickhardt Ritter von Sickingen until 1836 , * July 5, 1794 in Vienna , † May 16, 1858 in Reindorf , formerly a suburb of Vienna) was a Lower Austrian historian and topographer .
Life
Schweickhardt was the son of Josef Anton Schweickhardt (1749-1824) from Constance, who worked in Vienna, and his wife Maria Anna, née Lewitsch (1760-1837). After graduating from high school in Vienna, he attended architecture and mathematics classes at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and studied philosophy privately. From 1814 to 1818 he was in the army and then undertook extensive trips through the Austrian crown lands , German states and Russia. Then he devoted himself to Austrian geography and history.
His life was marked by financial irregularities and a permanent lack of money, which resulted from the fact that he had to live from his writing activity. This also influenced the publication of his works. From 1829 to 1833 he applied to the Lower Austrian provincial government for the use of his alleged nobility title "Reichsritter von Sickingen", but was warned to use this title. According to an advertisement in 1835, all books that he had published under the title of nobility had to be destroyed. He himself was sentenced to eight days ' arrest in 1836 , which was then commuted to a fine. He was later sentenced to severe imprisonment following bankruptcy and embezzlement . He died completely impoverished.
Act
In the years 1830 to 1846 he published 63 perspective maps (out of 160 planned steel engravings) of the Archduchy of Austria, some of which he drew. In the years 1831 to 1841 Schweickhardt published the "Representation of the Archduchy of Austria under the Enns", a historical and topographical description of Lower Austria in 34 volumes, which are arranged according to the four quarters and contain engravings and lithographs by various artists and Schweickhardts themselves. Friedrich W. Weiskern's topography served as a template .
He also devoted himself in 3 volumes to Vienna, Wiener Neustadt and Marchfeld. Today he is considered one of the most important topographers in Lower Austria . In the works on Styria and Salzburg, only the first historical volume appeared. The topography of Hungary remained with preliminary surveys. He also published several representations about princely and royal persons.
From 1848 to 1850 he was the publisher and editor of various newspapers and he was also active as a painter.
