Alois Blaßnig

Alois Blaßnig (born September 6, 1963 in Lienz ) is a former Austrian biathlete and cross-country skier .

Blaßnig was a member of the ÖSV squad from 1983 to 2002. The customs guard who started for HSV Lienz began his career as a biathlete. In 1984 he finished fourth at the Biathlon Junior European Championship and made his World Cup debut in Oberhof . At the 1985 biathlon world championships in Ruhpolding , Bavaria , he was only a substitute. After a three-year break due to illness and injury, he made a comeback as a cross-country skier. He started at the 1991 World Championships in Val di Fiemme and achieved 21st place over 30 km classic, 31st place over 10 km classic and 38th place in the 50 km freestyle competition. Another injury prevented a possible participation in the 1992 Winter Olympics . In 1993, 1995 and 1996 he was Austrian national champion in the cross-country relay and in 1994 he won the national championship in the 50 kilometer competition.

From the mid-1990s he enjoyed great success in the Worldloppet series. In 1998 he reached the 3rd place overall in the Worldloppet overall ranking, the World Cup for cross-country skiers , behind the two Swedes Hakan Westin and Elbert Karlson . In the 1998/99 season he achieved his only points in the cross-country world cup with a 19th place in the 10 km freestyle competition in Seefeld . He also started at the 2001 World Championships in Lahti , where he was 13th in the 50 km competition. In the same year he was the first Austrian to win the special cross-country skiing competition on the occasion of the International Customs Skiing Competitions, which had been held since 1954, and in 2002 he was again Austrian State Champion, this time over 10 kilometers of freestyle.

Because of a positive doping test , Blaßnig was banned from the FIS for two years in 2002 . The use of a doping agent at the end of his long and quite successful career was described by Blaßnig as his greatest sporting and moral mistake and he immediately began a multi-semester training as a qualified mental coach and qualified life coach. As such he works today a. a. mainly with young athletes on alternative paths for optimal performance and personality development. Blaßnig's commitment was probably one of the reasons why the Federal Ministry of Finance entrusted him in 2004 as a trainer and coordinator for the Nordic sports squad of finance. Only young top athletes from the fields of biathlon, cross-country skiing, Nordic combined and ski jumping belong to the sports team at Finanz .
