The 38th Nordic World Ski Championships were held from 7 to 21 February 1991 in the Italian Val di Fiemme in the region Trentino-Alto Adige instead. The cross-country skiing competitions took place in the cross-country skiing center Lago di Tesero and the jumping competitions on the Trampolino dal Ben ski jumps in Predazzo .
After the women's 5 km individual race in Lahti in 1989 , which had only premiered in Oberstdorf in 1987 , was not included in the calendar for the last time, from 1991 it found a place in the competition schedule instead of the 10 km distance. The men’s route was also shortened: the 15 km race in classic style was held for the first time over just 10 km.
For the first time since 1939 in Zakopane , a joint German team competed at the 1991 World Championships.
The best nations this time were Norway - five times gold, the Soviet Union - four times gold, and somewhat surprisingly Austria - three times gold. Finland , at the top two years ago at the home World Cup, had to be content with two silver and two bronze medals. Double winners in the men's category were the two Norwegian cross-country skiers Bjørn Dæhlie , Terje Langli and the Austrian ski jumper Heinz Kuttin . In the women's category , the Soviet cross-country skier Lyubow Jegorova made it , but the also Soviet cross-country skier Jelena Välbe was outstanding with three gold and one silver.
Surcharge to Val di Fiemme
This took place on June 11, 1988 at the 36th FIS Congress in Istanbul . The number of participants was 460 athletes from 30 countries.
