Kuusisto had his first international success at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 1986 in Lake Placid . There he won the bronze medal with the relay. The following year he won the silver medal over 10 km at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Asiago . He ran his first World Cup individual race in March 1987 in Lahti , which he finished in 26th place in the 30 km freestyle. In March 1990 in Örnsköldsvik he achieved his first classic World Cup point with 15th place over 30 km. At the 1991 World Championships in Val di Fiemme and at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , he won the bronze medal with the relay. He also achieved 26th place over 30 km classic and 23rd place over 50 km freestyle in Albertville. In March 1993 he was third with the relay at the World Cup in Lahti. In the 1993/94 season he reached the points three times and achieved his best overall result with 33rd place in the overall World Cup. He achieved his best individual result in the World Cup in Falun with fourth place over 30 km classic and also achieved third place with the relay in Lahti again. The following season he won in Oslo with the relay and ran in Sapporo in third place with the relay. He completed his last World Cup race in December 1998 in Davos , which he finished classically in 41st place over 30 km. At Finnish championships he won the 50 km in 1990 and in the pursuit in 1991.
