Johanssen landed his first success with the silver medal in team jumping at the Junior World Championships in 1988 in Saalfelden . He started on March 5, 1989 for the first time in the Ski Jumping World Cup . When jumping on the Holmenkollbakken in Oslo , he jumped on the podium for the first time with 3rd place. After he won the gold medal on the large hill at the Junior World Championships in Vang shortly afterwards and achieved the bronze medal with the team, he also won the bronze medal at the Norwegian championship on the large hill in Steinkjer . In the last competition of the season in Planica he was on the podium again and achieved his highest ranking of his career with second place. In the end, he finished 21st in the overall World Cup ranking. The following 1989/90 season began with poor results in Thunder Bay and Lake Placid . Also in the Four Hills Tournament 1989/90 he fell short of expectations with 33rd place in the overall tournament ranking. Only in Örnsköldsvik in March 1990 did he jump back into the top ten with eighth place. A short time later he won the silver medal on the large hill at the Norwegian Championships in Gjøvik . The 1990/91 World Cup season began, like the previous season, with poor results. Despite this, he was nominated for the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1991 and surprisingly won the silver medal on the normal hill in Val di Fiemme . Shortly afterwards he also won the silver medal on large and normal hills at the Norwegian Championships in Rognan .
Since he was subsequently unable to achieve any successes in the World Cup, Johanssen started between 1993 and 1996 in the second-class Continental Cup . In 1994 he won again the silver medal at the Norwegian championship in Vegårshei. For the 1996/97 season he jumped again exclusively in the World Cup, but ended his active ski jumping career after another unsuccessful season.
