The Endeavor River is a river on the Cape York Peninsula in the far north of the Australian state of Queensland .

history

The Endeavor River got its now valid name from James Cook , after he was forced to put his ship Endeavor on the beach on its shallow keel and repair it here in the winter of 1770 . The night before, the ship had struck the Endeavor Reef , a coral reef in the Great Barrier Reef , at Cape Tribulation , and was severely damaged in the process.

Captain James Cook and his crew stayed in this region for almost seven weeks and had contact with the Aborigines here . The scientists Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander went on intensive excursions and collected numerous specimen copies. Sydney Parkinson drew much of the fauna and flora of this region. Among other things, he painted the female of a Banks cockatoo, the first known illustration of an Australian parrot.

Today Cooktown lies at the mouth of the Endeavor River. It is the northernmost city on the east coast of Australia and was founded in 1873 near Cook's landing site.
