The Endeavor Reef is part of the Great Barrier Reef off the northeast coast of Australia in the Coral Sea . The coral reef strikes east-west and is seven kilometers long. The center of the reef is six kilometers southeast of the Hope Islands in the Hope Islands National Park and twelve kilometers from the mainland. The name of the reef goes back to the shipwreck of James Cook's ship Endeavor in 1770, but was not given by Cook, but only afterwards.

On June 11, 1770, the Endeavor ran aground at 11:00 p.m. during the high tide , after leaving the Pickersgill Reef to the north about an hour earlier .

The ship threatened to sink and the ship's crew escaped to the mouth of the Endeavor River , where they later put the Endeauvor down for repairs. To get the ship afloat again, ballast was thrown overboard, including six cannons. In December 1952, Hans Hass searched for the cannons on several dives without success. In 1969 the cannons were discovered. One of them can now be viewed after its restoration at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney . The repair of the ship lasted until August 4, 1770.
