The 53rd Nordic World Ski Championships are to take place from February 23, 2021 to March 7, 2021 in Oberstdorf ( Germany ). The winter sports resort in the Allgäu will be the venue for the third time after 1987 and 2005 .
The jumping competitions are to be held in the Audi Arena Oberstdorf , which is also home to one of the four hills, the Schattenbergschanze, from which the Four Hills Tournament is jumped every year . The running competitions should take place in the cross-country stadium in Ried.
For the first time, an individual competition for women in Nordic combined and one in ski jumping will be held on the large hill. In addition, as at the 2019 World Cup, medals are to be awarded in the three Nordic sports in 22 other competitions. As a result, there are twelve decisions in cross-country skiing , seven in ski jumping and five in Nordic combined . There are 13 competitions for men, 10 for women and one mixed competition.

Applicants for the organization were Oberstdorf, Planica and Trondheim . Oberstdorf had already applied four times in a row, Planica for 2017 and 2019. The detailed concepts of the applicants had to be submitted by September 1, 2015. The Fédération Internationale de Ski selected the venue on June 9, 2016 at the 50th FIS Congress in Cancún . Oberstdorf was awarded the contract, and Planica was chosen to host the 2020 Ski Flying World Championship .

Preparatory measures
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2021 Oberstdorf / Allgäu GmbH was founded to organize the world championships. In addition to the German Ski Association and SC 1906 Oberstdorf, shareholders are also the municipality of Oberstdorf and the district of Oberallgäu . The managing directors of the GmbH are Florian Stern from SC Oberstdorf and Robert Büchel from the German Ski Association. Moritz Beckers-Schwarz succeeded Büchel in March 2019.
As a preparation measure, the sports facilities are being renovated and partially rebuilt.
Among other things, the modernization of the snow-making systems and the construction of new functional buildings will take place. A wind net will be attached to the ski jumping facility , and the existing lift and landing slope will be modernized. The network of trails in the cross-country stadium is being adapted and renewed.
