Simone Opitz (born July 3, 1963 in Sonneberg ) is a former German cross-country skier who took part in international competitions between 1985 and 1993. The athlete starting for the SC Motor Zella-Mehlis achieved her best results over the longer distances in free technique .
Athletic career
1985 Opitz first appeared in a World Cup competition. In Klingenthal she finished 18th over the 10 kilometers. A week later she was able to place in the top ten in the Soviet Syktywkar over the 20-kilometer distance. A year later Opitz celebrated her first podium finish in the triple success of the GDR in the French Les Saisies over 10 kilometers freestyle behind Gaby Nestler and Carola Jacob and then won the World Cup over 20 kilometers freestyle in the Czech Nové Město na Moravě in front of her compatriot Gaby Nestler and the Norwegian Marianne Dahlmo . In the overall World Cup, Opitz finished fifth in her most successful season in 1986. Furthermore, she won the GDR championships over the 5 kilometers and over 10 kilometers distance that year.
In 1987 Opitz missed a medal at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1987 in Oberstdorf with the East German relay by five seconds and finished fourth. At the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, she won fifth place both with the GDR relay and the 20 kilometer freestyle. She was thirteenth and tenth over the 5 kilometers and 10 kilometers in the classic technique. Also at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1991 in Val di Fiemme , she ran the 10 kilometers freestyle and finished fifth with the German relay. She finished seventh over the 30 kilometer freestyle.
The last major international event in which Simone Opitz took part was the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville . Over the 30 kilometers of freestyle she was able to fight for eighth place. In the pursuit competition, she reached twelfth place and eighth place with the German relay.
At her last World Cup start in March 1992 in Vang, Norway, she finished eleventh over the 15 kilometer freestyle. In January 1993, Simone Opitz ended her international cross-country skiing career with 19th place at the Continental Cup in Admont, Austria .
