Edmond Apéti
Edmond Apéti (* 1946 or 1947 in Tsévié ; † July 2, 1972 in Lomé ), called Dr. Kaolo , was a Togolese soccer player.
As a striker for the Étoile Filante club from Lomé, for whom he played in the 1960s until his death in 1972, Kaolo achieved great local fame. His nickname "Dr. Kaolo “, the name of a pen that Togolese students used at the time, brought him his elegant style of play and his acceleration. A great success for Kaolo was reaching the final of the 8th edition of the CAF Champions League in 1968. Against what was probably the best African club team at the time, TP Englebert Mazembe from Lubumbashi . Due to a humiliating 5-0 defeat in the first leg, Etoile Filante was able to achieve a 4-1 in the second leg in Lomé, but it was not enough to win the title. Well-known teammates Kaolos were among others Christian Cadiry , Marcel Akueson and Ananou Désiré and the goalkeeper Tommy Sylvestre .
In 1972, the national team with German coach Gottlieb Göller managed to prevail against strong qualifying opponents Ghana and to take part in the African Cup of Nations for the first time . Although the team failed in the preliminary round of the competition held in Cameroon at the end of February 1972, Kaolo advanced to become one of the stars of this African Championship. With 3: 3 against Mali, 0: 2 against Cameroon and 1: 1 against Kenya, Kaolo scored all goals for Togo and was among the top scorers of the competition with 4 goals.
A few months after the African Championship, Kaolo died of a serious head injury on July 2, 1972 at the age of 25 as a result of a traffic accident with his moped on the boulevard of January 13 in Lomé. A trophy for national football clubs is dedicated to him and has been held in his hometown of Tsévié since 2005. The venue, the Stade Municipal Stadium “Dr. Kaolo ”in Tsévié bears his nickname as an epithet.
