Barco, who competed for the GS Fiamme Gialle, had his first international successes at the 1985 Winter Universiade in Belluno . There he won the bronze medal over 30 km and the silver medal over 15 km. He made his debut in the cross-country skiing world cup in March 1985 in Lahti , which he finished in 18th place over 50 km. At the following World Cup in Falun he got his first World Cup points with 11th place over 30 km and his first World Cup victory with first place in the relay. In the 1987/88 season he reached 18th place in the overall World Cup with three placements in the points, and thus his best overall result in the World Cup. With the second place in Oslo over 50 km freestyle he achieved his first podium in the individual World Cup. At the season highlight, the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary , he came in 38th place over 30 km classic and fifth place with the relay. The following year he ran at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1989 on 19th place over 50 km freestyle, tenth place over 15 km freestyle and seventh place with the relay. In the 1990/91 season he reached two top ten placements, including second place over 30 km freestyle in Štrbské Pleso , 20th place in the overall World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1991 in Fiemme Valley , he was tenth in the 15 km freestyle and fourth in the relay. In 1991 and 1992 he won the Toblach – Cortina run and in 1992 the Engadin Ski Marathon . In the 1993/94 season he came twice under the top ten in the World Cup singles and thus reached 24th place in the overall World Cup. He won second place with the relay in Falun and third place over 50 km freestyle in Thunder Bay . He also won the Continental Cup in Oberhof and Brusson over 15 km freestyle, the Transjurassienne over 76 km and the Marcialonga over 45 km freestyle. His 38th and last World Cup individual race he ran in January 1996 in Štrbské Pleso, which he finished in 34th place over 50 km freestyle.
