Walder, who started for the GS Forestale, ran his first of a total of 13 individual World Cup races in January 1985 at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld in Tyrol , which he finished in 16th place over 30 km. A year earlier he won the Gsieser-Tal-Lauf over 40 km freestyle. In March 1985 he won his first World Cup victory with the relay in Falun . In the 1985/86 season he came in eighth place over 5 km freestyle in Bohinj and fourth place over 50 km freestyle in Oberstdorf to 21st place in the overall World Cup. He also finished second in the relay in Oslo . The following season he achieved three top ten finishes. In Lahti he achieved his only podium finish in the individual World Cup with third place over 30 km freestyle and at the end of the season with 14th place in the overall World Cup his best overall result in the World Cup. At the season highlight, Nordic World Ski Championships in 1987 in Oberstdorf, he was eighth in the 50 km freestyle and fifth in the relay. In 1988 he won the Marcialonga 64 km freestyle. He completed his last world cup races at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary . There he came in 16th place over 50 km freestyle and in fifth place with the relay.
