Matthew Thomas Ritchie (born September 10, 1989 in Gosport , England ) is a Scottish football player .

He started his career at Portsmouth FC , but where he could not assert himself in the first team at a young age. After various loan deals at Dagenham & Redbridge , Notts County and Swindon Town , he finally moved to Swindon Town in 2011. In January 2013 he moved to AFC Bournemouth , with whom he made the march from the third to the first English division in two years . He has been under contract with the English first division club Newcastle United since the 2016/17 season . He has also been a Scottish international since March 2015 .

The two-footed Ritchie can occupy both offensive and defensive positions on both sides of the field and is known for his strong flanks.

Club career

Portsmouth FC

Born in Gosport , Hampshire , Ritchie started playing football at the age of six for local club FC Gosport Borough . At the age of 13 he came into the youth academy of Premier League -Vereins Portsmouth , which is located near his hometown. In the summer of 2008 he signed his first professional contract with Pompey . Ritchie also spent the preparation for the 2008/09 season with the first team and showed appealing performances in friendly matches.

Loan transactions

After he was convincing at the start of the season in the reserve and academy team, Portsmouth loaned him to the fourth division club Dagenham & Redbridge for a month at the end of September so that he could collect first operating times in professional operations. The 19-year-old Ritchie made his debut on September 27, 2008 when he was substituted on in the 1-1 draw against Rotherham United in the closing stages. His first league goal followed on October 4th in a 2-0 away win against AFC Rochdale and he scored again in the next game against FC Barnet . On December 30th, Dag & Red announced that they had extended Ritchie's loan until the end of the season. His strong performances at his loan club were also noticed by Portsmouth, who extended his contract by two years and named him the club's Young Player of the Season . In 40 appearances for Dagenham he scored 12 goals and was able to prepare four more. His club was ranked 8th in the table after 46 rounds.

On September 1, 2009 Ritchie moved to the end of the year on loan to Notts County , which played like his previous loan club Dagenham & Redbridge in Football League Two . In the Magpies he came on 16 missions in which he scored three hits. Although Notts County and Ritchie sought an extension of the loan until the end of the 2009/10 season , he returned to Portsmouth FC at the turn of 2010.

In the winter of 2010, Portsmouth was in talks with Swindon Town about a permanent change from Ritchie to the team from South West England , but this came to nothing. Nevertheless, Swindon coach Danny Wilson finally got his dream player on February 11, 2010, but he was only loaned from Portsmouth until the end of the season. He made his Football League One debut on February 23 in a 4-1 home win over Stockport County , when he came on for Danny Ward after just 25 minutes . After three more short appearances for Swindon, his home club Portsmouth Ritchie called back in March, as the southern English had to contend with injury concerns in the relegation battle.

Return to Portsmouth FC

Ritchie was on the bench for the first time in their 2-0 away defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on March 27, 2010. On April 14, he finally made his debut against Wigan Athletic in the Premier League. In the 0-0 draw he was on the pitch from the start, but was replaced by Frédéric Piquionne after 79 minutes of play . He was also used in the 2-1 home defeat against Aston Villa in the following game, when he was substituted on for Papa Bouba Diop in the closing stages . Portsmouth FC suffered relegation to the second-rate Football League Championship at the end of the season as bottom of the table . Still, Ritchie signed a new two-year deal with Pompey .

In the following 2010/11 season Ritchie was in the first two league games against Coventry City and Reading FC over the full game on the field. In the 1-1 draw against Reading, he prepared the opening goal by Nadir Çiftçi . In the following two games he came from the bench in the second half and in the next few games he was already out of the game with coach Steve Cotterill . The dreadful start of the season of the relegated forced Cotterill to bet on experienced players. It was not until the 8th match day that Portsmouth celebrated their first win of the season with a 6-1 home win against Leicester City , in the absence of Ritchie. In the 3-1 home win against Bristol City in the next game, he was substituted on one last time before it was decided to loan Ritchie again.

Swindon Town

On October 4, 2010 he was loaned a second time to the third division club Swindon Town. Initially, a one-month loan was planned, which was extended by two more months two weeks after Ritchie's arrival. At Swindon he was firmly scheduled as a regular and on October 16 he scored his first goal for the Robins in the 4-5 away defeat by Peterborough United . After he completed every league and cup game for his loan club until January and scored four goals in these and prepared four more, Swindon Town committed him on January 7, 2011 permanently for a transfer fee of € 300,000. He signed a 2 1/2 year contract there. Also in the rest of the 2010/11 season he was used in all games and scored three more goals and was voted Swindon's Player of the Season . Nevertheless, he had to accept relegation to League Two with his new club as bottom of the table.

Under the new coach Paolo Di Canio , he kept his place in the starting line-up in the next season 2011/12 and contributed significantly to Swindon's promotion to League One with 10 goals and 12 assists in 40 league games. His good performances were also noticed by other League One clubs during the season, most notably Bournemouth AFC sought the services of the winger . A corresponding offer from the Cherries in the amount of 400,000 pounds (currently around 450,000 euros) was rejected at the end of November 2011. Coach Di Canio then hung a price tag of £ 2 million (currently around 2.2 million euros) on Ritchie. In March, his excellent season was named best player of the season with the Football League Two Player of the Year Award . He also received a call-up to the Football League Two Team of the Year along with his teammate Paul Caddis . After the season, his club turned down a transfer offer of 900,000. As a sign of not having to sell key players to the competition, his contract was extended to 2014.

The 2012/13 season also started well for Ritchie. In his first seven appearances of the season he scored five goals and assisted in another. Swindon made it into the top 6 of the table at the turn of 2013, which is sufficient to participate in the promotion playoffs. By the end of January 2013, he had nine goals and just as many assists on the account. His club could not withstand the increasing interest of AFC Bournemouth and the tempting transfer fee and sold him to the team from Dorset in the winter transfer window .

Bournemouth AFC

On January 30, 2013 Ritchie signed a 3 1/2 year contract with League One promotion aspirants AFC Bournemouth . The transfer fee that was ultimately paid for him amounted to 400,000 pounds (currently around 450,000 euros) and was thus far below the offer from the summer of 2012. Ritchie himself said he was surprised to have to leave the club. Coach Di Canio accused the Swindon club of selling Ritchie behind his back and questioned his future with the Robins . Ultimately, Di Canio left the club on February 18.

Ritchie made his debut on February 2, 2013 in a 3-0 away win at MK Dons for his new club. In the first games for Bournemouth he was also used as a left-back , but returned to his regular position on the right wing after six games. He scored his first goal on March 23 in a 4-1 home win against Bury FC . This victory ushered in a winning streak of eight games, which promoted the Cherries from seventh to first place in the table. In the 3-1 home win on Matchday 43 against his former club Notts County, Ritchie met twice. At the end of the season they managed to move up to the second-rate championship with second place in the table behind the Doncaster Rovers . Ritchie finished the season with 12 goals and 11 assists.

In the following season 2013/14 Ritchie played his first game on the 16th matchday in the 0-1 home defeat against Derby County . On Boxing Day 2013, he single-handedly decided the game in favor of his team. In the 3-0 win against Yeovil Town , he scored in the 50th minute the lead and seven minutes later he doubled it. He also prepared the goal for the final score in the 65th minute by Eunan O'Kane . In his first seven appearances of the season he scored 5 goals and prepared another. At the end of the season he found himself with Bournemouth on 10th place in the table. He himself finished the year with nine goals and three assists in 32 missions.

Ritchie started the 2014/15 season with two assists in a 4-0 away triumph against Huddersfield Town . He was one of the key players in the Bournemouth team, which was already fighting for the championship in the championship in the second season after promotion. At the end of the season, he ensured with excellent performances that Bournemouth actually succeeded in promotion to the Premier League. In the 2-2 draw against Sheffield Wednesday he scored and prepared a goal. He repeated this performance in the following game against the Bolton Wanderers . In the 3-0 away win in their last game against Charlton Athletic , he marked a brace and secured the championship for the Cherries . Ritchie made a significant contribution with 15 goals this season and 17 assists

He scored his first goal in the Premier League on September 19, 2015 against Sunderland AFC . On October 25, he met in the 1: 5 home defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the first minute of the game. The 2015/16 season ended Bournemouth in 16th place in the table and only escaped relegation by 5th points. Ritchie could not confirm his form from the previous season in the Premier League, but still got ten points scorer.

Newcastle United

Nevertheless, Ritchie got down because he moved to the previous season 's Premier League relegated Newcastle United for the 2016/17 season. He became the third commitment of the coach Rafael Benítez , who should help the team to immediate promotion. Ritchie made his debut on the first day of the season in the 0-1 away defeat against Fulham FC . He scored two games for the Magpies for the first time when he sank a penalty in the 4-1 home win against Reading FC. After that hit, he was designated Newcastle's penalty taker and was involved in an incident twice during the season in that role. In the 6-0 runaway victory in the League Cup against Preston North End , he refused to execute the striker Aleksandar Mitrović and converted him himself. In the league game against Burton Albion, he sank another penalty, which was denied by referee Keith Stroud because Dwight Gayle walked into the box too early. The game continued with an indirect free kick for Burton, but ultimately ended in a 1-0 win for Newcastle as Ritchie later scored the winning goal. The season ended for him with two games left after showing misconduct to an official in the players' tunnel after the 1-1 draw with Leeds United . His 12 league goals and eight assists nevertheless promoted Newcastle back to the Premier League.

In the 2017/18 season , he drew attention to himself with four assists in the first five league games. His first goal of the season took until February 11, 2018. He scored the goal of the day in the surprising 1-0 home win against Manchester United , which was a very important one in the battle for relegation. Ritchie also netted again in the home wins against Southampton FC and Arsenal FC . In the end, Newcastle clearly held the class with 10th place. Ritchie contributed with three goals and six assists.

His third season at Newcastle began with an assist in the 2-1 home defeat in the first game of the season against Tottenham Hotspur. He scored his first goal of the season in the league on January 29, 2019, when he scored the penalty kick in the 80th minute of the surprising 2-1 home win over Manchester City . His second and last he scored on March 16 in a 2-2 draw against his former employer AFC Bournemouth. At the end of the 2018/19 season , he had two goals and eight assists, which he scored in 36 league games. Ritchie played in the Benítez team this season for the first time in his career in the position of left full-back .

National team

Due to his origins, Ritchie was able to accrue for both his native England and his father's homeland, Scotland. On March 16, 2015, he was nominated for the first time for the Scottish national football team as part of the friendly match against Northern Ireland and the qualifier for the 2016 European Championship against Gibraltar . In the game against Northern Ireland on March 25th, he made his debut and prepared the decisive 1-0 through Christophe Berra . On June 5, he met the national team for the first time in a 1-0 home win in a friendly against Qatar . His second goal followed in a 2-2 draw in the European Championship qualifier against Poland , in which he was also able to run an assist. This hit was voted 2015 Goal of the Year in Scotland.
