Paul Dummett (born September 26, 1991 in Newcastle upon Tyne , England ) is a Welsh national football player who has played for the Welsh national team since 2014 . The 1.83 meter tall, left and center defender has been under contract with Newcastle United since 2010 , where he has played since his youth.

Athletic career

Dummett started at his hometown club Newcastle United as a youth and was the captain of the reserve team. In his first Premier League season, however, he was loaned to the fifth division club Gateshead FC , for whom he played ten games in March and April 2012. For the next season he was awarded to the Scottish first division club FC St. Mirren , for which he initially played 16 games. After an FA Cup game on January 5, 2013 for Newcastle, through which a dream came true for him, he was awarded again to the Scots, in which he helped in 14 games that the club was not relegated as the penultimate. In the Scottish League Cup 2012/13 he reached the final with St. Mirren and won it 3-2 against Heart of Midlothian . He has been playing for Newcastle United since the 2013/14 season and initially finished tenth with the club. On May 23, 2014, he fouled the Uruguayan Luis Suárez in the game against Liverpool, for which he received the red card , which was later revised . With Suárez injuring his knee in the game, which reduced his chances of playing at the 2014 World Cup , Dummett received online death threats from Uruguay. But then Suárez was able to play at the World Cup.

In the two following seasons Newcastle then went downhill: first they were 15th and then 18th, which meant the club had to relegate. As a second division champion , however, succeeded in direct recovery. As a climber, they reached 10th place.

National team

Since his grandparents are Welsh, he can play internationally for Wales even though he was born in England. In 2012 he was used for the first time for Wales in a qualifier for the U-21 Euro 2013 .

On June 4, 2014, he played his first international match with the senior national team at the age of 23, after the Welsh had qualified for a European Championship finals for the first time without his participation. In the friendly against the Netherlands , the Oranjes' last friendly before the 2014 World Cup, which the Welsh lost 2-0, he came on for Neil Taylor in the 83rd minute . The Dutch were then opponents in his second international match on November 13, 2015, where he came on again for Taylor. On May 9, 2016, he was appointed to the provisional squad for the Euro 2016, with which a training camp in Portugal began on May 23. In the end, however, he was not considered for the final squad.

In the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League , he made two appearances again after almost three years without an international match.
