The central defender comes from the youth department of Nottingham Forest , where he established himself in the first team after a loan to Stevenage FC . He moved to Newcastle United in August 2014 and has been the team's captain since the 2016/17 season .

Lascelles played for the U18 , U19 , U20 and U21 selections of his home country.

Club career

Nottingham Forest

Beginning with Nottingham Forest

Born in Derby in the East Midlands , Jamaal Lascelles began playing football at the youth academy in Nottingham Forest , where he played in various junior teams. At the Tricky Trees he was considered one of the greatest young talents in recent years and in January 2011 Nottingham Forest turned down a £ 5 million transfer offer from Arsenal for him. In January 2014, Everton FC was fined £ 45,000 by the FA for unauthorized contact with the underage Lascelles in 2010 . His advisor at the time was also fined £ 10,000. In March 2011, 17-year-old Lascelles received his first professional contract. On January 31, 2012 (28th matchday) he made his debut in the 2-0 home defeat against Burnley FC in the second-highest English division . For now, this should be his only one for Forest.

On loan from Stevenage FC

In March 2012 Lascelles joined the third division FC Stevenage on loan , where he should collect the remainder of the 2011/12 season match practice in the professional area. He made his debut on March 13, 2012 (28th matchday) in a 1-0 home win against Oldham Athletic , when he came on in the 69th minute for offensive player Luke Freeman . In the next league games he often sat on the bench until he scored his first goal on April 14 (43rd matchday) in a 6-0 away win against Yeovil Town in his first appearance in the starting line-up. In the remaining five league games of the season he was the right -back the full distance of the game on the court. Stevenage qualified sixth in the table for the promotion play-offs. In the semi-finals of the play-offs they were eliminated with a 0-0 draw in the first leg and a 0-1 defeat in the second leg against Sheffield United . Lascelles was in both games and then returned to Nottingham.

Return to Nottingham Forest

On August 7, 2012, Jamaal Lascelles signed a new four-year contract with Tricky Trees . On August 18, 2012 (1st matchday) he played his first season appearance in the 1-0 home win against Bristol City when he was substituted on for Radosław Majewski in the closing stages . In this 2012/13 season he was listed in the Forests squad, but was only used in two league games and one league cup game .

After he was also disregarded by the new head coach Sean O'Driscoll at the beginning of the next 2013/14 season , he pushed into the starting line-up from the end of October 2013 and formed the duo in central defense with Jack Hobbs . He kept this regular position with his successor Alex McLeish , whose contract was terminated by mutual agreement after 40 days in office. On February 8, 2014 (30th matchday) he scored his first league goal for Forest in the first league game of the new manager Billy Davies in the 1-1 draw against Blackpool FC . On April 12 (42nd matchday) he scored his second goal of the season in the 2-5 away defeat against Queens Park Rangers . In this 2013/14 season he played 29 league games in which he scored twice. In addition, he was in five cup and league cup games in use, in which he was able to score a goal.

Newcastle United

On loan from Nottingham Forest

On August 9, 2014, Jamaal Lascelles moved to the first division club Newcastle United together with his teammate, goalkeeper Karl Darlow . Both players were loaned to Nottingham Forest for the entire 2014/15 season as part of this transfer . His regular place in central defense he had to work out again this season, where he had to oust his partner from the previous season Jack Hobbs to form the central defender duo with newcomer Michael Mancienne and later with Kelvin Wilson . He made his only goal of the season on February 25, 2015 (33rd matchday) in a 2-1 home win against AFC Bournemouth . He was used in 25 league games and two league cup games.

Relegation and promotion with Newcastle United

For the 2015/16 season Jamaal Lascelles returned to Newcastle United. On August 25, 2015, he made his debut for the Magpies in a 4-1 home win in the league cup game against fourth division club Northampton Town . He made his Premier League debut on October 3, 2015 (8th match day) in the 6-1 away defeat by Manchester City , when he came on in the 53rd minute for the injured Kevin Mbabu . In the next weeks and months Lascelles received only sporadic playing time as a substitute from head coach Steve McClaren . For the first time in the starting lineup he was on January 23, 2016 (23rd matchday) in the 1: 2 away defeat against FC Watford , in which he also scored his first goal. In the 3-0 away defeat against FC Everton on the next match day, he flew off the pitch with a “yellow-red”. Despite this setback, he was able to establish himself in the starting line-up in the near future due to injuries to the regular central defenders Chancel Mbemba and Fabricio Coloccini . After McLaren's dismissal, he kept his regular place at the relegation-threatened club under the new coach Rafael Benítez . In April 2016, after a loss to Southampton FC , he appeared in front of the press and criticized the lack of team spirit and the struggle of his teammates against relegation. Newcastle remained undefeated under Benítez in the last six league games, but could not escape relegation to the championship. Lascelles came to 18 league appearances this season, in which he scored twice.

Newcastle United officials held on to Rafa Benítez as head coach for the following 2016/17 season . This promoted Lascelles after the departure of Fabricio Coloccini on August 4, 2016 as the new captain of the team. Benítez justified this step by stating that he had the necessary mentality for this post and that he would always speak up in the dressing room when necessary. Newcastle reacted to two defeats at the beginning with a furious winning streak of five games. Lascelles contributed a goal in the 2-0 home win against Brighton & Hove Albion on August 27, 2016 (5th matchday). After two league games without a win, they celebrated eight wins in a row and placed first in the table. In the next few months they remained the front runner, with Lascelles having played almost all competitive games since the beginning of 2017 despite a groin injury, which he only had surgery after the end of the season. As captain, he led his team to the championship title and promotion to the Premier League with three goals in 43 league games.

Establishment in the Premier League

At the beginning of the next season 2017/18 Lascelles impressed with his strong performances and was nominated for the award for Premier League Player of the Month September , which was won by Harry Kane . He scored his first goal of the season on September 10, 2017 (4th matchday) in a 1-0 away win against Swansea City . On October 6, 2017, Lascelles signed a new six-year deal with Newcastle United. A few days later, he got into a physical argument with his teammate Mohamed Diamé during training , which he had previously called lazy. As compensation, both had to invite the entire team to dinner. Due to an ankle injury, he missed five league games between mid-November 2017 and early December 2017. He then returned to the starting line-up and ended the season with 33 appearances in the league, in which he scored three goals. Newcastle ranked tenth in the league table.

On August 29, 2018, after a 2-1 defeat by Chelsea , he got into an argument with Matt Ritchie , which degenerated physically in the dressing room. Benítez reacted to this escalation without any consequence. In October 2018, Jamaal Lascelles extended his working paper for another year and signed up to the club until 2024. After a very weak start to the season, Newcastle only managed to make the final jump out of the relegation zone in the second half of the season. In this season 2018/19 he did not score in 32 league games and Newcastle finished them in 13th place in the table.

After Rafa Benítez's contract was not renewed, Jamaal Lascelles got a new head coach in Steve Bruce for the 2019/20 season . On October 27, 2019 (10th matchday), he scored his first goal of the season in a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers . In the 2-1 home win against AFC Bournemouth two weeks later, he was substituted in the 20th minute of the game due to a knee injury and replaced by Paul Dummett . As a result, he was not operational for two months.

National team

In April 2011 Jamaal Lascelles played an international match for the England U18 national team . From March 2011 to February 2012 he played eight friendly international matches for the U19s .

On May 28, 2013 Lascelles was nominated in the U20 squad for the 2013 U20 World Cup in Turkey . In this he came in the first group game, in the 2-2 draw against Iraq , for his only use.

In September and November 2014 he played an international match for the U21s .
