William McIntosh "Billy" Davies (born May 31, 1964 in Glasgow , Scotland ) is a former Scottish football player and current coach . Most recently, he coached the English second division club Nottingham Forest .

Active career

Billy Davies started his professional career in 1981 with the Glasgow Rangers and thus in his hometown Glasgow .

For the 1986/87 season he moved to Fotbollsallsvenskan , the first Swedish football league. After a year at IF Elfsborg , however , he left Sweden again and moved back to Scotland for FC St. Mirren , a club from Paisley, a town 13 km west of Glasgow.

After a short trip to England in the 1989/90 season to the then second division Leicester City , Davies moved back to Scotland in 1990 to Dunfermline Athletic .

In the 1993/94 season Davies changed the club for the last time in his playing career. This time it took him to Motherwell FC . After the 1997/98 season, Billy Davies ended his active career with stints in Scotland, Sweden and England.

Coaching career

Motherwell FC

Billy Davies remained loyal to Motherwell FC even after his playing career and took over the position as head coach in the Scottish Premier League . In his second season, Davies reached fourth place with the team from Motherwell and thus only missed the leap into the UEFA Cup by 2 points and one place. The 2000/2001 season was deeply disappointing after good performances in the previous season. At the end of the season, Motherwell FC finished 11th and penultimate place. The only positive thing about the season was that only the bottom of the table had to be relegated to the second division. Davies was dismissed in the first half of the season after a very bad start with 3 points from 7 games.

Preston North End

After serving as assistant coach to Craig Brown at Preston North End , he followed Brown in 2004 and took over the position of head coach. In its first season Preston North End was fifth in the Football League Championship 2004/05 and thus moved into the play-offs. It was only in the final that they had to admit defeat to West Ham United and thus just missed promotion to the Premier League . After a difficult start to the 2005/06 season , Preston North End started a 22-game series without defeat under Davies and reached fourth place at the end of the season and thus again the play-offs. This time, however, the team failed in the semi-finals at Leeds United .

Derby County

After 2 years at Preston North End Davies moved to the 2006/2007 season for league rivals Derby County . There, too, he and his team made it into the play-offs by finishing third. After Derby prevailed against Southampton FC in the semifinals , the team defeated West Bromwich Albion 1-0 in the final at Wembley West and thus made it into the Premier League . The start in the Premier League 2007/08 failed with only 6 points from 14 games and led to the separation of Derby County and Billy Davies on November 26, 2007.

Nottingham Forest

On January 1, 2009, Davies took over the coaching position at the English second division club Nottingham Forest and in 2008/09 managed the league newcomer to stay at risk in the meantime. The 2009/10 season was much more successful and led the club to third place in the table. In the first play-off round Forest had to play against Blackpool FC . After a 2-1 home win, Blackpool won the high-class second leg at the City Ground 4-3 and moved into the play-off final against Cardiff City .

In the Football League Championship 2010/11 , the team increased after a weaker start to the season and kept in touch with the direct promotion places at times. After a slump in the last third of the season, which was also caused by the failures of Guy Moussi , Robert Earnshaw and Dexter Blackstock , Forest even fell temporarily from the play-off ranks. With good results in the last few games, Billy Davies team secured sixth place in the table in the final sprint and thus entry into the first play-off round against Swansea City . After a disappointing 0-0 first leg at City Ground , Nottingham lost the second leg in Swansea 3-1. As in the previous year, the team thus missed the finals.

Negotiations with the board of directors proved difficult after the end of the season. Disagreements about investing in new players had already marked the current season. On June 12, 2011, the club announced the separation from Billy Davies.

On February 7, 2013, Nottingham Forest's new board announced the return of Davies. Thanks to an interim winning streak, Davies led the team back to a play-off spot before a 2-3 home defeat against Leicester City on the final day of the game cost them a place in the promotion round. After extensive investments in the squad, Forest spent much of the following season on a play-off place. Long-term injuries to various regular players led to a significant drop in the team's performance from mid-February 2014. Two days after a 5-0 defeat at neighboring Derby County on March 22, 2014, the board announced the split from Billy Davies.
