At the XVI. 1992 Olympics in Albertville was speed skiing as a demonstration event held. On the high-speed slope in Les Arcs , about 60 km from Albertville, there was a competition for men and women. On the slope, which is extremely steep with a gradient of up to 70% and free of all obstacles, the average speed was measured over a distance of 100 m between two light barriers. The speed determined by the French winner Michael Prufer from two runs was 229.299 km / h and thus meant a world record . He beat his own record from 1988 by 5.558 km / h. Tarja Mulari from Finland also set a new world record with 219.245 km / h (old WR: 214.723 km / h). However, the competition was overshadowed by a fatal accident involving Swiss racing driver Nicolas Bochatay , who collided with a snowcat on a public ski slope.
