Nicolas Bochatay

Nicolas Bochatay (born August 27, 1964 in the canton of Valais , Switzerland; † February 22, 1992 in Les Arcs , Savoie department ) was a Swiss ski racer .

The nephew of the ski racer Fernande Bochatay initially competed in alpine ski races, for example at the Swiss championships on February 21, 1981, when he came 8th in the downhill in Pizol, and at the European Cup downhill on March 1, 1981 in San Sicario (rank 14). At the Alpine Junior Ski World Championships in 1982 in Auron, he finished 19th in the downhill and 29th in the giant slalom. He later switched to speed skiing .

Bochatay was killed on the penultimate day of the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics . The participant in the demonstration discipline of speed skiing collided with a snowcat around 9:30 a.m. while warming up on a public ski slope . The day before he was still the best Swiss in qualifying. There were different statements about the exact circumstances. Team representatives spoke of a caterpillar driving under a hill with no warning signals, while others reported excessive speed from both Bochatay and his teammate.
