Jetro Willems (born March 30, 1994 in Willemstad , Curaçao , Netherlands Antilles ) is a Dutch football player . The left defender is under contract with Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt .

Career

Willems began his professional career at Sparta Rotterdam , where he made his first appearance in the Eerste Divisie on January 16, 2011 . In the game against Go Ahead Eagles Deventer he was on the starting line-up. On August 31, 2011 he moved to PSV Eindhoven , where he signed a three-year contract. There Willems made his debut in the Eredivisie on October 23, 2011 when he came on as a substitute for the game against Vitesse Arnhem . In April 2012, he extended his contract to 2016. On April 13, 2014, Willems suffered a cartilage tear in his right knee in the league game against Feyenoord Rotterdam . Because of this injury, he missed the start of the new season and the World Cup in Brazil . The defender appeared in 192 competitive games for PSV, scored twelve times and prepared 34 more goals.

For the 2017/18 season Willems moved to Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt , with whom he signed a four-year contract. In May 2018 he won the DFB Cup with Eintracht after beating FC Bayern Munich 3-1 in the final . In the following season, the team reached the semi-finals of the Europa League .

For the 2019/20 season , Willems was loaned to Newcastle United for one season . In addition, the Magpies secured a purchase option. The Dutchman played 19 games in the Premier League and one in the League Cup before tearing a cruciate ligament in a game against Chelsea in mid-January 2020 and was out until the end of the season.

National team

Willems took part with the Dutch U17 selection at the 2011 U17 European Championship and won the title with his team. In May 2012 he was appointed by bond coach Bert van Marwijk to the squad of the Dutch senior team for the European Championship 2012 and made his first international appearance in the preparatory game against Bulgaria . Willems took over the position of his teammate Erik Pieters , who was unable to participate due to a broken metatarsus. When he played in the first group match against Denmark , Willems was the youngest player ever to play at a European Championship at the age of 18 and 71 and replaced Belgian Enzo Scifo in this ranking . Overall, Willems was used in all three games of the "Elftal" at the European Championship .

Willems was also part of the national team afterwards and played several qualifying games for the 2014 World Cup , for which he was ultimately not appointed to the Dutch squad . From November 2014 to June 2015 he was used three times in European Championship qualifiers and missed with his team participation in the finals in France . On October 10, 2016 Willems completed his 22nd and so far last international match in the 0-1 defeat in the World Cup qualifier against France .
