Timothy "Timmy" Chandler (born March 29, 1990 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German-American football player . The full-back is under contract with Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt and has been an American national player 29 times .

Career

youth

Chandler's father is an American soldier who was stationed in Germany. After his parents separated after his birth, Chandler grew up with his German mother in Hesse . He started playing soccer at Sportfreunde in Oberau / Altenstadt . At the age of eleven he caught the attention of young scouts from Eintracht Frankfurt at an indoor tournament , whereupon he switched to the youth of this club. He had a very successful time there and was the South German champion with the U15 in 2005.

While still in the A-youth he was used for the first time in the U23 of Frankfurt in 2007/08 towards the end of the season. At the end of the season, the team rose from the Hessenliga to the Regionalliga Süd and Chandler played two more years in the fourth-highest league, in which he established himself as a regular player.

Club career

Chandler 2011 as a Bundesliga player for 1. FC Nürnberg

In 2010 he moved to the league competitor 1. FC Nürnberg II . There Chandler, who had previously played on the offensive, was converted to a defensive player and used on the right or in the defensive midfield. He played almost all of the regional league rounds and scored four goals.

On October 8, 2010 he was used for the first time in a test match between the first team of the Franks against Sigma Olomouc . After two regular players on the right side of the defense fell out shortly afterwards and the substitute formation against 1. FC Kaiserslautern had failed, his Bundesliga debut was under discussion, but this was not the case after Juri Judt returned .

Nonetheless, Chandler's professional career finally began with the second half of the 2010/11 Bundesliga season . He did the preparation with the professionals and also traveled to the training camp in Turkey. At the start of the second half of the season against Borussia Mönchengladbach on January 15, 2011 , he sat on the bench for the first time. Just four days later he was substituted on in the final minutes of the DFB Cup eighth final against Kickers Offenbach , and on January 22nd he made his Bundesliga debut in the game at SC Freiburg . This was followed immediately by another cup appearance and his home premiere against Hamburger SV . On February 12th (22nd matchday) he scored 3-1 in a 4-1 win in the away game at VfB Stuttgart and thus his first Bundesliga goal. He also prepared the 2-0. By the end of the season he took over the regular position on the right defensive side and played in 14 of the 17 second round games. In March, Chandler prematurely extended his contract with the Franks until 2013.

In the following two seasons he was still undisputed in the right-back position. It was not until the second half of the 2012/13 season that he was used more aggressively on the right under the new coach Michael Wiesinger . Chandler completed 30 games before ending the season prematurely because of a torn knee ligament. On the second match day of the 2013/14 season he returned to the team and from then on took over the regular position on the right defensive. In the third game of the second half of the season, his 100th game in the league and cup for 1. FC Nürnberg, he again injured his left knee seriously in a fall and fell out again for several weeks after tearing the outer meniscus.

Chandler 2017 as a player for Frankfurt Eintracht

After the relegation of Nuremberg from the upper house of football, Chandler returned to Eintracht Frankfurt for the 2014/15 season , but this time as a first-team player, for a transfer fee of one million euros . He signed a contract until June 30, 2017, which was prematurely extended to 2020. In Eintracht's game operation as a regular player (and under Niko Kovač after the departure of Bastian Oczipka on the left wing), he scored three goals for the "Adler" in the Bundesliga by the end of the 2017/18 season and prepared ten. The highlight of his club career so far was the 3-1 final victory against FC Bayern Munich in the DFB Cup in May 2018 . Due to cartilage damage in his right knee joint, Chandler had to undergo an operation in August 2018 and was absent for most of the season. On May 5, 2019, he was used for the first time for Eintracht in the Bundesliga away game against Leverkusen. Because of the relatively strong competition from Filip Kostić and Danny da Costa , Chandler was mostly only used through substitutions in the first half of the 2019/20 season . Nonetheless, his contract in Frankfurt was extended early until the end of the 2021/22 season. In the second half of this season Chandler was used by the Kovač successor Adi Hütter in the right midfield. From this more offensive position, he managed to score more goals for Eintracht in just a few months than in all seasons since his return to Frankfurt.

National team

Timothy Chandler took part in a course for the German U17 national team in January 2007, among others with his future Frankfurt team-mate Kevin Trapp . Chandler, who has German and US citizenship, announced in January 2011 that he wanted to play for the US national team if necessary . After his breakthrough in the Bundesliga, he was appointed to the US national team for the first time by the then US coach Bob Bradley for two friendly matches against Argentina and Paraguay at the end of March 2011 . He made his debut for the United States national team on March 26, 2011 when he came on as a substitute for Jonathan Spector in the second half against Argentina . In the game against Paraguay three days later, he was on the field for the national team for the first time from the start.

When Chandler was nominated under Bradley's successor Jürgen Klinsmann from May 2012 for competitive games as part of the qualification for the 2014 World Cup , he initially canceled. The sporting director of his former club 1. FC Nuremberg, Martin Bader , was at that time in this context that Chandler feel "more than German" - Chandler himself denied but to try to keep open the possibility possibly for the DFB team questioned get. After his first competitive appearance for the USA on the first day of the final round of the World Cup qualification against Honduras on February 6, 2013, this discussion was over . It was the only game that Chandler played in this World Cup qualification. At the World Cup in Brazil , he was number 21 in the "US Boys" squad, but was not used. Chandler played a further six compulsory international matches (all of them in the starting line-up) at the Gold Cup 2015 (4) and as part of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup (2). Since the end of the "Klinsmann era" in November 2016, Chandler has not been appointed to the US selection.
