Makoto Hasebe ( Japanese 長 谷 部 誠 Hasebe Makoto ; born January 18, 1984 in Fujieda ) is a Japanese football player . The former captain of the senior national team , for which he played 114 times, has been under contract with German Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt since 2014 . Hasebe can act as a defensive midfielder , but also plays as a central defender or sweeper .

Red diamonds
Hasebe, who comes from Fujieda in Shizuoka Prefecture , became a professional with the Urawa Red Diamonds in January 2002 after graduating from high school . During this season he only came to a few missions, but became a regular player in the following 2003 season. In his third year, 2004, he won the New Hero Award in the Nabisco Cup and was also voted into the best team of the season.
VfL Wolfsburg
In January 2008 Hasebe left the Urawa Red Diamonds and moved to Europe for VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga . There he was mainly used as a replacement for the central defensive or offensive position. He made his Bundesliga debut on February 2, 2008 in the game against Arminia Bielefeld . On matchday 30 of the same season he scored his first competitive goal for VfL. In the 2-2 draw against Bayer 04 Leverkusen , the Japanese scored a 2-1 lead. In the following season, the Wolfsburg midfield was set with Christian Gentner , Josué and Zvjezdan Misimović . For fourth place in this formation Hasebe fought mostly with Ashkan Dejagah . After the 2008/09 season he became German champions with VfL. It was the first championship title in the club's history. In the following two seasons, the Japanese remained mostly regular players, especially in the last third of the 2010/11 season, when Wolfsburg played against relegation, he was used more often.
On the 6th matchday of the 2011/12 season , Hasebe guarded Wolfsburg's goal from the 80th minute in the game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , as goalkeeper Marwin Hitz had seen the red card and the Wolfsburg had already changed three times . Hasebe conceded the goal to the 1: 3 final score by Roberto Firmino .
1. FC Nuremberg
On September 2, 2013 Hasebe moved to 1. FC Nürnberg on the last day of the transfer period within the league . He signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2016. The Japanese made his debut for FCN on matchday five in a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Braunschweig .
Eintracht Frankfurt
After relegating Nuremberg to the 2nd Bundesliga, Hasebe moved to Eintracht Frankfurt for the 2014/15 season . In May 2018 he won the DFB Cup with Eintracht after beating FC Bayern Munich 3-1 in the final . With his 309th appearance on June 6, 2020 against 1. FSV Mainz 05 , Hasebe became the Asian record player in the Bundesliga.
Hasebe's contract runs until 2021.
National team
At the appearances of the Japanese national team at the beginning of 2006, Hasebe was taken on by coach Zico . He made his debut on February 11, 2006 against the USA. Although he was not appointed to the squad for the 2006 World Cup , the new coach Ivica Osim brought him back to the national team for the first games after the World Cup. On November 18, 2009, he met in the 4-0 win against Hong Kong for the first time for the Japanese national soccer team. At the 2010 World Cup , Hasebe was part of the regular formation and was named captain of the senior national team by Japanese coach Takeshi Okada . At the Asian Cup taking place in Qatar from January 7 to 29, 2011 , he and his team reached the final, which was won 1-0 in extra time against Australia . In 2014 he played with Japan at the World Cup , but failed in the group stage. On September 1, 2016 Hasebe completed his 100th international match in the 2-1 defeat against the United Arab Emirates . At the 2018 World Cup he reached the round of 16 with Japan, but failed there because of Belgium . Hasebe then ended his international career after 114 appearances. At the end of November 2018 he was named “ Asia's International Footballer of the Year ” by the Asian Football Confederation .
