Predissociation

The term predissociation describes the decomposition ( dissociation ) of a molecule into mostly two building blocks, whereby the full dissociation energy does not have to be applied, since there is an electronically excited state B, the dissociation energy of which is below that of the current binding molecular state A. If a vibronic level is excited in the binding initial state A, from which a transition to B is possible, and if its energy is above the dissociation energy of B, the molecule can split up spontaneously.
