Attendees

In the final, FC Bayern Munich , who reached the final for the first time since winning the Cup in 2016, met Eintracht Frankfurt , who made it to the final for the second time in a row after losing to Borussia Dortmund the previous year. Frankfurt's last cup win was in 1988. After 2006, the two finalists met for the second time in the DFB Cup final.

Stadion

As has traditionally been the case since 1985, the final took place for the 39th time in the Olympiastadion Berlin .

referee

The appointment of the arbitrator was announced on May 3, 2018. Felix Zwayer from Berlin was allowed to direct the cup final in his hometown for the first time. He described this in advance as “something very special and extraordinary.” The final day was Zwayer's 37th birthday. His assistants were Thorsten Schiffner and Markus Häcker, the fourth official was Patrick Ittrich . Bastian Dankert acted as video assistant , who, like Zwayer, was nominated as video assistant for the soccer world championship in Russia the following month.

Guests

In addition to Frank-Walter Steinmeier , who traditionally hands over the trophy as Federal President, Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister of Finance Olaf Scholz and Horst Seehofer , Federal Minister of the Interior, Home and Building, member of the Federal Government responsible for sport were also present.

In addition to national coach Joachim Löw , Lothar Matthäus and Philipp Lahm were also two DFB honorary captains in the stadium.

Cup holder

Since the show around the game was criticized last year, a halftime show was waived again. The trophy was not carried into the interior by former athletes, as in previous years, but by well-deserved former players from both clubs. These were Paul Breitner for Bayern Munich and the Bundesliga record player Karl-Heinz Körbel for Eintracht Frankfurt, who also brought the trophy high on the podium after the game.

Television broadcast

The game was broadcast live on Das Erste . The moderator was Alexander Bommes and the expert was former national player Thomas Hitzlsperger . Tom Bartels was the commentator .

Controversy

Referee Felix Zwayer made two controversial decisions in particular in the game, despite the video evidence . Before the opening goal by Ante Rebić (82nd), the ball had jumped to the hand of Kevin-Prince Boateng , but the referee recognized unintentional handball and let the goal count. In addition, Zwayer decided in stoppage time in a confusing situation in the Frankfurt penalty area , when Kevin-Prince Boateng tried to clear the ball from the penalty area and hit Javi Martínez from behind on the foot, not to foul penalty for Bayern Munich. Instead of the possibility of 2-2 equalization with a penalty, Mijat Gaćinović instead hit the empty goal after the immediately following corner with a counterattack to make the final score 3-1.

After the DFB President had put the silver medals on the players of the team, they and coach Jupp Heynckes left the interior of the stadium, although it is customary for the defeated finalist to stand in line and applaud the winner at the award ceremony. Only Manuel Neuer and Tom Starke stayed for the occasion. The disappearance of the rest of the team was criticized in public as unsporting and disrespectful. A little later Heynckes regretted the behavior in an interview and congratulated Frankfurt on the victory.

Sandro Wagner caused a stir . The FC Bayern attacker threw his silver medal into the audience just seconds after it was awarded to him.
