Jonathan Alexander "Johnny" de Guzmán (born September 13, 1987 in Toronto ) is a Canadian - Dutch soccer player . The midfielder and 14-time Dutch senior international was most recently under contract with Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt .

Personal

De Guzmán was born to a Filipino father and a Jamaican mother in the Canadian province of Ontario . In 2008 he received Dutch citizenship in addition to his Canadian citizenship . His older brother Julian de Guzmán was also a professional footballer and was active for the Canadian national team , of which he is the record player.

Career

At the age of twelve, de Guzmán left Canada for the Netherlands , where he played for the youth of Feyenoord Rotterdam . He made his debut in the A-Team in 2005 on his 18th birthday in a league game against SC Heerenveen . De Guzmán scored his first goal in the Eredivisie on September 30, 2005 in the game against Willem II Tilburg . After eleven years at Feyenoord, he moved to RCD Mallorca, trained by Michael Laudrup , in July 2010 . At the end of August 2011, de Guzmán moved to Villarreal FC . In 2014 de Guzmán moved to the Italian Serie A club SSC Napoli . In January 2016, he was loaned to league rivals FC Carpi until the end of the season. The season 2016/17 played de Guzman at Chievo Verona .

For the 2017/18 season , de Guzmán moved to Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt , with whom he signed a three-year contract. In his first season he quickly became a permanent fixture in the team, but had to take a break for several months due to an ankle joint injury in November 2017. In May 2018 he won the DFB Cup with Eintracht after beating FC Bayern Munich 3-1 in the final ; de Guzmán started this game. In the following season he scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 4-1 home win against Hannover 96 on September 30, 2018 and scored two more times in a total of 28 league appearances by the end of the season. In the Europa League he was called up nine times during the season and reached the semi-finals with the Frankfurt team , in which they failed on penalties at Chelsea . In the 2019/20 season, de Guzmán initially hardly played a role in Frankfurt's squad and only made three competitive appearances until a season break in March 2020, which was forced by the COVID-19 pandemic . He was then used five more times by the end of the season. After the end of the 2019/20 season, de Guzmán left Eintracht because his contract was not extended.

National team

After obtaining Dutch citizenship in February 2008 , de Guzmán decided to play for the Dutch Federation and took part in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing with the Dutch U21s . He was used three times in the tournament and reached the quarter-finals with his team . Overall, de Guzmán played 15 times for the U21s and scored 6 goals.

On February 6, 2013 he made his debut in a 1-1 friendly match against Italy under bond coach Louis van Gaal in the senior national team . The latter nominated de Guzmán to the Dutch squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . There he was used three times and took third place with his team. By 2015 de Guzmán had played 14 national games, after which he was no longer considered.
