In the draw for the final round on 6 December 2013, the Netherlands were placed in pot 4 with the other unseeded European teams due to their position in the FIFA world rankings in October 2013. They were drawn to group B with defending champion Spain (group head). In addition, Australia and Chile were drawn into the group. Against the Spaniards, the 2010 World Cup final was repeated in the first group match. Overall, the record against the Spaniards before the World Cup was negative (4 wins, 1 draw and 5 defeats). There was only one game against Chile before, in the consolation round of the 1928 Olympic Games, which ended 2-2. Before that, there were only friendlies against Australia (most recently on October 10, 2009), which ended in two draws and one defeat.
All the preliminary round venues were on the Atlantic coast. In the only game in one of the venues before the World Cup - in Salvador da Bahia - Brazil were the opponents in a 2-2 draw on June 5, 1999.
The team's quarters were Caesar Park Ipanema in Rio de Janeiro . The team had to leave the hotel before the final because FIFA needed it for officials and sponsors arriving for the final.
