In Group F, three teams took the first three places with equal points, each with two wins. All games ended with successes of one goal difference. With an identical point and goal difference, the Netherlands were first ahead of Saudi Arabia, which lost 1: 2 in a direct comparison against Oranje . Belgium moved into the round of 16 as the third team, beating their neighbors 1-0. Morocco did well in fourth place despite the three defeats, because they were extremely close with two 1: 2 and one 0: 1.

In the round of 16, Dennis Bergkamp (10th) and Wim Jonk (40th) were the goalscorers for the Netherlands against Ireland. The defensively strong Irish managed no goal on the offensive. So the favorite won.

In the quarter-finals between Brazil and the Netherlands, the Dutch were able to catch up with a 2-0 lead for the Brazilians. A free kick goal by Branco in the 81st minute of the game, however, ensured the decision in favor of the South Americans.
