Career

society

Van Gobbel began his professional career in 1988 with Willem II Tilburg . After he quickly became a top performer, the top Dutch clubs took notice of the defensive player. During the winter break of the 1989/90 season he moved to Feyenoord Rotterdam . Van Gobbel found it difficult to assert himself there and only made two league appearances in the second half of the season. It wasn't until the new season that he managed to get regular appearances. His time in Rotterdam was very successful. In 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1995 he won the KNVB Cup with the Red-Whites . As a result, the club was a regular participant in the European Cup Winners' Cup . In addition, the club secured the Johan Cruyff Schaal in 1991 , ie the national Super Cup and was the first team, apart from 1949, to hold this cup in their hands. In 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995 they failed at PSV Eindhoven and Ajax Amsterdam respectively . In the 1992/93 season van Gobbel became Dutch champions with Feyenoord. In January 1996 the defender left the Netherlands and transferred to Turkey, to Galatasaray Istanbul . Van Gobbel continued to collect trophies at the top Turkish club. A few months after his arrival, he won the Ziraat Türkiye Kupası , the national cup, with Gala , and soon afterwards the President's Cup . After van Gobbel was more often in the role of the spectator for the new season, he left the Istanbul club in October 1996 and joined Southampton FC in England . Van Gobbel made his debut in the Premier League on October 19, 1996, the 10th matchday, in the home game against AFC Sunderland . In the 3-0 win, FCS coach Graeme Souness offered him in the starting lineup. The club narrowly secured relegation in the Premier League. Shortly before the end of the transfer period in the summer of 1997, van Gobbel returned to the Netherlands, to Feyenoord, where he would again become an important part of the following title collections. In 1998/99 he became Dutch champion for the second time and made the double perfect with the Super Cup . One of his greatest successes, however, was his entry into the 2002 final against Borussia Dortmund . The game was won 3-2. Van Gobbel was not used and was not in the squad. In the summer of the same year he ended his active career after he came to only two league appearances in 2001/02 due to minor recurring injuries. He played a total of 302 competitive games for the red-whites and scored five goals.

National team

Van Gobbel was on the field eight times for Oranje from 1993 to 1994. In the summer of 1994 he was appointed to the squad for the World Cup in the USA by the then Bond trainer Dick Advocaat . There he came to work. In the first group game of the World Cup, on June 21, 1994, the defender was in the star formation of the Dutch. In his team's 2-1 victory, van Gobbel completed the full 90 minutes. In the following games he was replaced by Stan Valckx .
