Colombia played in Group A against Romania , the USA and Switzerland . The first game against Romania on June 18, 1994 in Los Angeles lost Colombia 1: 3 (goal: Adolfo Valencia ). The second game against the USA on June 22, 1994 in Los Angeles lost Colombia 1: 2 (goal Adolfo Valencia). Andrés Escobar scored the first goal for the USA by an own goal. The third game against Switzerland on June 26, 1994 in San Francisco won Colombia 2-0 with goals from Herman Gaviria and Harold Lozano. With 3 points, Colombia was eliminated as the bottom of the table after the preliminary round.
Assassination of Andrés Escobar
The World Cup had tragic aftermath for the Colombians when the defender and own-goal scorer against the USA, Andrés Escobar , was shot dead on the street after returning to his homeland.
