This article covers the Colombian national football team at the 2018 World Cup . Colombia could only qualify on the last day of the South American qualification. The team took part for the sixth time. At the last World Cup, Colombia had reached the quarter-finals for the first time and set the top scorer.

qualification

The team qualified through the qualification of the South American football association CONMEBOL .

Games

James , Colombia's top scorer in qualifying

In qualifying, Colombia continued to rely on the Argentine José Pékerman , who had already led the team to the previous World Cup and to the quarter-finals there. The Colombians started with a 2-0 home win in Barranquilla , where they played all their home games, against Peru. After that, they couldn't win three times and only get one point. In 2016 they won the first three games, but then lost in Brazil. A 1-0 win in Paraguay, which only fell in stoppage time, was followed by two draws against Uruguay and Chile and a defeat in Argentina. In 2017 they started with two wins and after two draws against Venezuela and the already qualified Brazilians on the penultimate matchday with a home win against Paraguay, they could have booked the World Cup ticket. In the 80th minute, Falcao gave the Colombians the lead, but eight minutes later Paraguay was able to equalize and turn the game around completely in stoppage time, which brought Paraguay back into the race for one of the World Cup tickets. This means that the direct qualification for Colombia was missed and on the last day of the match six teams were still fighting for three direct World Cup tickets. Colombia ultimately qualified with a 1-1 draw in Peru, with James putting his team in the lead in the 55th minute, while goalkeeper David Ospina made things exciting again 22 minutes later with an own goal. In the end it stayed at 1: 1 and since Chile lost in Brazil and Paraguay at home to bottom group Venezuela, this draw was enough for direct qualification. For Peru the draw meant fifth place and thus the way through the intercontinental playoffs, in which they were the last team to qualify for the World Cup against New Zealand. With a defeat by one goal difference, Colombia would have had to go to the playoffs and Peru would have qualified directly, with three goals difference only sixth place would have jumped out.

A total of 45 players were used in the 18 games, ten of them only once. Only goalkeeper David Ospina was used in all games and did not miss a minute. Carlos Sánchez , who had to pause after the second yellow card, played 15 games , Edwin Cardona and Juan Cuadrado , who were forced to pause once after a red card - received in stoppage time in the 3-0 draw against Uruguay - and once after the second yellow card had to. The top scorer was James, the top scorer of the last World Cup, with six goals, but due to injury he was only used in thirteen games. Record scorer Falcao only appeared in eight games in which he scored two goals. A total of ten players scored the goals for Colombia, and they also benefited from an own goal by a Brazilian player, but this did not affect the result.

For the draw of the qualifying groups on December 1st, Colombia was assigned to Pot 2 and could therefore be drawn into a group with world champions Germany, European champions Portugal or host Russia. The Colombians could not be drawn to any of the four other South American teams. The team met in Group H , the only group without an ex- or current world champion, on Japan , Poland and Senegal .

The Colombians met Japan in the last group game of the previous World Cup and won 4-1. Also in the preliminary round of the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup , the two faced each other in the last game and Colombia won 1-0. There was also a goalless draw in a friendly. There were only friendlies against the other two opponents: against Poland four wins, one draw and two defeats; a win and a draw against Senegal.

Colombia has not yet played in Russia. The three Colombian venues are closest to each other.
