Bernardo José Espinosa Zúñiga (born July 11, 1989 in Cali ) is a Colombian football player . The central defender has been under contract with Espanyol Barcelona as a loan player from FC Girona since July 2019 .

Career

Espinosa moved in January 2008 from the youth department of Sevilla FC to the second team, for which he completed 18 games in three and a half years. On November 10, 2010, he made his first-team debut. In the fourth round of the Copa del Rey , Espinosa started against third division Real Unión Club and also scored his first goal for the professional team of Sevilla FC. His league debut for the first team came on May 11, 2011 against CA Osasuna , before moving permanently to the first team in July 2011.

In the 2011/12 season, Bernardo Espinosa played on loan for Racing Santander . He played 26 games and scored two goals. At the end of the season, the club rose from bottom of the table in the Segunda División .

After half a year without playing for Sevilla FC in the 2012/13 season, Espinosa switched to Sporting Gijón on loan for half a year . He scored two goals and one assist in 22 appearances. At the end of the season, Sporting Gijón signed the Colombian on a free transfer. In three seasons Espinosa came on another 98 appearances for Sporting , in which he scored 7 goals.

In the summer of 2016, Bernardo Espinosa made a free transfer to English first division club Middlesbrough, with whom he was relegated penultimate to the English second division in the 2016/17 season. In his one year in England he played in eleven league games and four cup games.

For the 2017/18 season , the Spanish first division club FC Girona signed the 27-year-old Espinosa. There was a € 4.5 million transfer fee for the Colombian's services , which temporarily made him the club's record entry before Johan Mojica and Marc Muniesa replaced him in summer 2018. In two seasons in Girona , Espinosa made 72 games in which he scored one goal and four assists. In the 2018/19 season he was relegated to the second Spanish league with FC Girona .

In July 2019, Bernardo Espinosa moved from relegated FC Girona on loan for one year to first division club Espanyol Barcelona . After the season, the regional capital club of Catalonia has a purchase option to sign the Colombian .
