The best season in the club's history was the 1935/36 season, when the first of the Segunda División was. The Spanish Civil War prevented the Catalans from entering Spain's first division.
Girona played between the second and third division for decades until the 2016/17 season.
They finished the 2016/17 season in second place in the Spanish second division and thus rose directly and for the first time in the club's history to the Primera División after failing three times in the play-offs in the previous four years .

In 2019, a 3: 3 away match in the second leg of the round of 16 of the Spanish Cup against Atlético Madrid (first leg: 1: 1) made it possible to reach the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey for the first time in the club's history. There they were eliminated against Real Madrid. On March 6, 2019, FC Girona won the "Supercopa de Catalunya" organized by the Catalan Football Association by beating FC Barcelona 1-0.
