Domènec Balmanya Perera (born December 29, 1914 in Girona , † February 14, 2001 in Barcelona ) was a Spanish football player and coach . 1966 to 1968 he coached the Spanish national team.

Player career

Balmanya moved in 1935 from his home club FC Girona to FC Barcelona , for which he made his debut on November 10, 1935 in the derby against Espanyol Barcelona (0-1). In his first season, 1935/36, at Barcelona, he won the Catalan championship and moved into the final of the Spanish Cup. The subsequent Spanish championship was not held due to the Spanish civil war . Even so, in 1937, some Republican clubs around Barcelona organized a Mediterranean league that Barcelona eventually won. In 1937, FC Barcelona played a few games in the USA to put money back into the tight coffers. Ultimately, some Barcelona players took the opportunity to go into exile and so Balmanya joined the French club FC Sète like his team-mate Josep Escolà . In 1941 the two players returned to Barça from exile. In the 1941/42 season one narrowly escaped relegation from the Primera División after winning the relegation games against Real Murcia . However, the team won the Spanish Cup in the same year.

Between 1935 and 1944 Balmanya played 4 times for the Catalan football team .

Coaching career

Balmanya's first coaching station was Gimnàstic de Tarragona , with whom he was immediately relegated from the Spanish first division. After further positions at FC Girona and Real Saragossa , he was able to celebrate his first small success as a coach at Real Oviedo in 1955. Real Oviedo reached second place in the Segunda División , but ultimately failed in the playoffs for promotion. Between 1956 and 1958 he was the coach of FC Barcelona and coached greats like Velasco , Joan Segarra , Antoni Ramallets , László Kubala , Luis Suárez and Evaristo . In his two seasons with Barcelona he was third in the league and won the Spanish Cup in 1957 and the Exhibition Cup in 1958. Between 1960 and 1962 he coached Valencia CF , which he led in the 1962 exhibition cup final. However, this had to be postponed due to an overlap with the 1962 World Cup . By the time the final, which Valencia finally won against FC Barcelona, was played, Balmanya was already no longer coach of Valencia. In the 1963/64 season he was the coach of Betis Sevilla . In the following season he led CD Málaga to promotion to the Primera División . Just one year later, he won the Spanish championship as coach of Atlético Madrid in the 1965/66 season. This success made him the national coach of the Spanish national team in 1966 , which he coached in 11 international matches until 1968.
