Antoni Ramallets i Simón (born June 4, 1924 in Barcelona , † July 30, 2013 in Vilafranca del Penedès ) was a Spanish football player .

Career

Club career

Antoni Ramallets started at CD Europa Barcelona at the age of 17 and then played at San Fernando and RCD Mallorca because the city's big club had observed him but initially showed no interest . In 1946, CF Barcelona finally signed the goalkeeper - only to loan him to Real Valladolid immediately . A year later, Ramallets came back to CF, but was only on the bench there or played in Barça's second team - until he was suddenly allowed to play for the league team for the first time in November 1949 because of an eye injury to regular goalkeeper Velasco. He used this opportunity so convincingly that he quickly forgot the previous number 1 and was hardly missing in the line-up in the following 13 years. Even more: just seven months after his first league appearance, he traveled to the World Cup with the national team as a substitute goalkeeper in the summer of 1950 (see below) .

Until his resignation in 1962, Antoni Ramallets had been in goal in 473 competitive games (538 games in total) for Barcelona and, with his great saves, but also his calm and security, had played a major role in the club's numerous successes. During these years he was four times Spanish champion with the CF (some also count the two titles when he was only on the bench) and won the national cup five times . Twice he was personally awarded the Trofeo Zamora as the goalkeeper with the fewest league goals - and if this trophy had not only been available from the 1958/59 season, he would have won it in 1952, 1956 and 1957. It should not be forgotten that Ramallets achieved these successes at a time when the Catalans had an almost overwhelming rival in their own country with Europe's best club team at the time, Real Madrid .

In 1952 Ramallets won the Coupe Latine with Barça , and the trade fair trophy in 1958 and 1960 . In Europe Champions Cup , he was in 1961 known to a wider German audience when he in the semifinals, the striker of Hamburger SV to Uwe Seeler almost brought to despair. Nevertheless, until a few moments before the final whistle of the second leg in the Volksparkstadion , soccer Germany believed that it was already in the final; but that reached Barcelona after a playoff in Brussels. The CF then lost this final in May 1961, however, 2: 3 against Benfica Lisbon , with the reliable goalkeeper of all things having an own goal.

At almost 38 years of age, he said goodbye to competitive sports in his home stadium .

National player

Between June 1950 and May 1961, Ramallets played 35 international matches for Spain .

His very first international appearance took place in the second round match of the 1950 World Cup in Brazil , when the almost 26-year-old newcomer to Chile kept his box clean and was then used against England . In this game Ramallets reacted almost like a dream in a multitude of dangerous situations and saved the 1-0 lead that gave Spain the surprising entry into the final round of the four group winners. The day after, the newspapers wrote of the "cat from Maracanã " and meant the goalkeeper from Barcelona. He was then praised for his sensational constitution after the game against Uruguay , although the equalizer of the eventual world champion to the 2-2 final score seemed tenable. And if he hadn't parried a few days later at 1: 6 against a Seleçao that was unleashed , Spain would have left the field with a double-digit pack. At the end of this tournament, Ramallets and his colleagues had surprisingly finished fourth in the World Cup - an important propaganda success for the country, which was relatively isolated internationally due to the Franco dictatorship, and one of the best athletic placements the Spaniards achieved in the 20th century. Despite having played only four of the six Spanish games and scoring eight goals, the late debutant from Barcelona has been and is called the tournament's best goalkeeper.

Life after the active time

Antoni Ramallets worked as a coach for several years after 1962, including in Valladolid , Zaragoza , Logroño and Murcia , and was then part of the technical advisory team at FC Barcelona for two years. He then turned his back on football entirely and worked in a bank . Ramallets died on July 30, 2013 after a long illness at the age of 89 in Vilafranca del Penedès .
