Trainer
So far, he has completed his coaching career with mixed success. After he had led Rayo Vallecano into the Primera División in his first year , he went to Barcelona and also helped Espanyol to rise. Camacho had a good year there with offensive football in the best Spanish tradition. The reward for my work was fourth place and thus qualification for the UEFA Cup . This was followed by a short stint at Sevilla before Camacho's return to Real Madrid ended under adverse circumstances: a resignation after only 22 days in office and before the first game; Differences with management were given as the reason. Camacho returned to Espanyol, but could not build on the earlier success there. The team ended up in the middle of the table.
In 1998 he took over the Spanish national team , which he led to the quarter -finals both at the European Championship finals in 2000 and two years later at the World Cup in Japan / South Korea .
In 2002 he took over the coaching job at Benfica Lisbon during the season and led the club, steeped in tradition, from seventh to second place and thus into the Champions League . In the year Benfica was again runner-up and also won the cup competition in the final against FC Porto .
From July 1, 2004 to September 19, 2004, he was again coach at Real Madrid after 1998. This time his time on the coaching bench of the "Royal" ended with his resignation after the fourth match day. His successor was a former teammate, the former Real Madrid goalkeeper Mariano García Remón , who himself could only hold his position until the end of the preliminary round.
Since August 20, 2007 he was back coach at Benfica Lisbon after Fernando Santos was sacked after just one match day. On March 9, 2008, he resigned from his coaching position at Benfica after the deficit on leaders FC Porto had grown to 14 points.
On October 13, 2008 he signed a contract with the Spanish first division club CA Osasuna until the end of the 2008/09 season . With the team he should achieve relegation. After they managed to do this with a 2-1 win over Real Madrid on the last day of the match, Camacho's contract was extended for another year. On February 14, 2010 Camacho was sacked after a 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad and the fall to a relegation zone.
In August 2011 he was appointed head coach of the Chinese national team . On June 24, 2013 after the prematurely missed World Cup qualification and a 5-1 loss to Thailand, he was dismissed by the Chinese association.
