István Hiller
István Hiller [ ˈiʃtvaːn ˈhilːɛr ] (born May 7, 1964 in Sopron , Hungary ) is a Hungarian historian and politician .
He studied history and Latin at the Loránd Eötvös University . Since 1989 he has been teaching Medieval History at his alma mater . He was named the best university teacher of the year in 2001. He became a lecturer in the same year.
He has been a member of the MSZP ( Magyar Szocialista Párt , Socialist Party of Hungary) since 1989 . Between 1999 and 2000 he was vice-chairman of the committee. In 2000 he was elected to the party presidium. In 2003 he became vice president of the party. After the party's disaster in the European elections, he became the new party leader.
Hiller has been a member of parliament since 2002. In the same year he became State Secretary in the Ministry of Education. In 2003 he became Minister for Cultural Heritage in Péter Medgyessy's cabinet . He kept his post under Ferenc Gyurcsány . Hiller announced that he would be leaving his ministerial post on February 14, 2005 in preparation for the election campaign for the 2006 elections. From June 9, 2006 to May 29, 2010 he was Minister of Culture of the Hungarian Republic.
He is married and has two sons.
