Luis Molowny Arbelo (born May 12, 1925 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife , Spain , † February 12, 2010 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria , Spain) was a Spanish football player and coach . In 1969 he was in charge of the Spanish national team.
Player career
Luis Molowny began his football career in his home club CD Tenerife , where his father Raúl had been active in the 1920s. At the age of only 17 he moved to the neighboring island of Gran Canaria , to Marino FC . The Canarian winger's technically adept style of play caught the attention of major Spanish football clubs such as Atlético Madrid and FC Barcelona , but it was Real Madrid, chaired by Santiago Bernabéu , that Luis Molowny was finally able to sign in 1946. Here he lived his greatest time as a football player, and won twice the league as well as the Copa del Rey and the Coupe Latine . He also won the first European Cup with Real Madrid . In 1957 he returned to the Canary Islands , where he ended his career at UD Las Palmas .
National team
Luis Molowny played a total of seven games for the Spanish national team and scored two goals. He was part of the squad for the 1950 World Cup , in which Spain ultimately reached fourth place.
Coaching career
After the then coach of UD Las Palmas José Urbieta was dismissed, Luis Molowny moved from playing field to the bench in 1957. During this time the club celebrated the greatest successes in the club's history. In the 1967/68 season, the club was third in the league, the following year even runner-up. In 1969 Molowny briefly looked after the Spanish national team.
In 1970 Luis Molowny moved to the coaching staff of Real Madrid, where he finally replaced Miguel Muñoz in 1974 , who had been with the “Royal” for over a decade, during the season. In his first year he won the Spanish Cup, the Copa del Rey . After this success, the humble Canary returned to youth work before he took over the post of head coach again in 1977, replacing Miljan Miljanić . In his two years he was able to conquer as many championship titles. After another retreat into the youth work, he was brought back in 1982, this time as a replacement for Vujadin Boškov , as an interim coach and promptly won the Copa del Rey again.
In 1985 and 1986 Luis Molowny, who never wanted the post of head coach, but was repeatedly called upon in emergency situations and earned the reputation of a lucky charm, had his most successful time. This time he replaced the Madrid veteran Amancio and won the UEFA Cup in two seasons . The big chases against teams like Borussia Mönchengladbach , Inter Milan and RSC Anderlecht were particularly memorable .
Between 1986 and 1990, Molowny was in the management of Real Madrid before finally retiring from football.
