Javier Clemente Lázaro (born March 12, 1950 in Barakaldo , Bizkaia , Basque Country ) is a former Spanish football player and current coach . As a coach, he was responsible for the Spanish, Serbian and Cameroonian national teams.

Player career

Between 1968 and 1971 Clemente played 47 games in the Primera División for Athletic Bilbao , scoring six goals. He was also a member of the team that won the Copa Del Generalísimo in 1969 .

Career as a club coach

At the age of less than 22 he had to end his playing career due to injury and began training as a coach at Arenas Club de Getxo , CD Baskonia and finally Athletic Bilbao, before becoming head coach of the club for the first time in 1981.

Master of the Primera División

By mixing experienced players like Daniel Ruiz Bazán and Andoni Goikoetxea with young players like Andoni Zubizarreta , Miguel de Andrés , Ismael Urtubi and Estanislao Argote , Clemente put together one of the most successful teams in the history of Athletic Bilbao. In 1983 the club won the Primera División and in the following year, in addition to the championship, the Copa del Rey . During his first coaching position, a bitter rivalry developed between Athletic Bilbao and FC Barcelona . The trigger was the criticism of Barcelona coach César Luis Menotti of the tough and mostly defensive style of play of Clemente's team. Clemente then referred to Menotti as an "outdated hippie". The insults intensified after a Primera División game in Camp Nou on September 24, 1983, when the defender Goikoetxea, also known as the butcher of Bilbao (English. The butcher of Bilbao ) seriously injured Diego Maradona by a foul. On July 5, 1984, the two clubs met again in the final of the Copa del Rey and the game ended in a great scuffle between the players of both clubs.

Return to Athletic Bilbao

Clemente's first appointment as coach of Athletic Bilbao ended in 1986. However, he came back to coach the club in the 1990/91 and 2005/06 seasons. On both occasions he could not repeat the success of his first calling. Even so, he helped Athletic Bilbao avoid relegation in 2006. In January 2006 he accused Samuel Eto'o of spitting in the game between FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao and was therefore involved in the then current racism controversy in Spain.

RCD Espanyol

After Clemente was fired from Athletic Bilbao in 1986, he was appointed coach of Espanyol Barcelona . In the first season he led the club to third place in the Primera División and to qualify for the UEFA Cup . There he led the team to the finals. In the final against Bayer 04 Leverkusen , they won their first game 3-0. However, Leverkusen also managed a 3-0 in the second leg and the game went to penalties, which Espanyol Barcelona lost 3-2. Clemente ended his career in charge of Espanyol in 1989. After bringing Atlético Madrid to second place in the Primera División during the 1989/90 season, he came back to Espanyol Barcelona. A decade later, he moved to the Espanyol dugout for the third time and stayed there until 2004.

Other clubs

Clemente also coached several other Primera División clubs, such as Betis Sevilla , Real Sociedad and CD Tenerife . In the 2000/01 season he was the coach of the French club Olympique Marseille .

Real Murcia

In March 2008 he signed a contract with relegation-threatened Spanish first division club Real Murcia as the successor to Lucas Alcaraz .

Career as national coach

Spain

In 1992, Clemente became the coach of the Spanish national soccer team . During his tenure, the team remained unbeaten in 31 games in a row. His first game was a 1-0 win over England on September 9, 1992. He coached the team during the 1994 and 1998 World Cups and the 1996 European Championship . He was often criticized by the domestic media for bringing many Basque players on board. After 62 games under his responsibility, resigned after a 3-2 defeat by Cyprus on September 5, 1998.

Serbia

On July 21, 2006, Clemente became the first foreign coach to become the head coach of the Serbian national soccer team . The first game on August 16, 2006 ended with a 3-1 away win against the Czech Republic . In September 2007 he caused a sensation when he was chauffeured 2300 kilometers by car from his home in Bilbao to Belgrade for the European Championship qualifier against Serbia against Finland . The reason for this was that he had broken his collarbone and four ribs in a fall, with one rib digging easily into his lungs. As a result, the attending doctors forbade him to travel by plane and Clemente had to use the car. Due to Serbia's failure to qualify for the 2008 European Championship , he was released in November 2007.

Iran

On January 24, 2008 it was announced that Clemente would sign a three-year contract as national coach of the Iranian team . According to the contract, his services would have been remunerated with a monthly salary of 30,000 euros . Without having played a game, Clemente was replaced as the Iranian team boss on February 20, 2008. He had refused to live in Iran while working.

Cameroon

On August 17, 2010, Clemente succeeded Paul Le Guen as head coach of the Cameroonian national team . After he missed qualifying for the 2012 Africa Cup with Cameroon , he was released from his duties in October 2011.

Libya

In September 2013, the Libyan Football Association announced that Clementes would be the new national coach.
