The Met Office is the UK's national meteorological service . The name Met Office was originally the abbreviation of Meteorological Office , but is now the official name.

The service was founded in 1854 by Robert FitzRoy as a small division within the Board of Trade that mainly issued storm warnings to seafarers. After the Met Office was initially part of the Ministry of Defense from 1990, it has been subordinate to the Ministry of Economic Affairs since 2011. Today it is obliged to act according to entrepreneurial principles.

The Met Office also has a weather forecasting center in Aberdeen and offices in Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands . A little-known department is the Mobile Met Office , which provides weather data to troops during conflicts, particularly the Royal Air Force . This division moved to Bracknell , Berkshire, in 2003 .
