Andoni Goikoetxea Olaskoaga (born May 23, 1956 in Alonsotegi , Province of Biscay ) is a former Spanish football player and current coach . A defender known for his bloodthirstiness, he won the Spanish championship in 1983 and 1984 with Athletic Bilbao and also won the cup in 1984. The "butcher of Bilbao", as he is commonly known, "straddled his way through the stadiums of the world more brutally than anyone else in his guild" and inflicted protracted injuries to players such as Diego Maradona and Bernd Schuster . He later played for Atlético Madrid and between 1983 and 1988 also 39 times for the national team with which he took part in the 1984 European Championship and the 1986 World Cup.
After several positions as an association coach at the RFEF , where he reached third place in 1994 and the final of the U-21 European Championship in 1996 , he coached several Spanish clubs in eleven years, with these, apart from the promotion with UD Salamanca in the first league in 1997, hardly any successes.
Player career
society
Goikoetxea began his playing career in the second team of Athletic Bilbao . From there he made the leap into the legendary Basque team of the 1980s. With Javier Clemente as coach and teammates like Andoni Zubizarreta , he won four national titles during his time at Athletic (1975-1987), including two championships in 1982/83 and 1983/84. In the 1983/84 season, the “Dream Team” also won the trophy , and the Spanish Supercup followed a year later .
At the end of his career as a player, Goikoetxea went to Atlético Madrid for three years before ending his career in 1990.
Goikoetxea was known for his extremely brutal style of play. The press and fans gave him the nickname "The Butcher of Bilbao" . The British newspaper Times put him in first place in a list of the 50 toughest players in football history in 2007, as did the German football magazine 11 Freunde in 2013 . The defender injured Diego Maradona during his time at FC Barcelona with a foul from behind so badly that it led to a long-term dispute between Athletic and FC Barcelona. Also Bernd Schuster felt the hardness of the Basques in his time at FC Barcelona. At the age of 21, he was seriously injured in his knee.
National team
Andoni Goikoetxea Olaskoaga also played an important role in the national team. For the Spanish national team he appeared in 39 games and scored four goals. The Basque played his first game for the Selección on February 16, 1983 against the Dutch national football team . He took part in the European soccer championship in France in 1984 and the 1986 soccer world championship in Mexico for Spain.
Coaching career
The beginnings
Goikoetxea was successful in his first coaching position. With UD Salamanca he rose to the first division in 1996/1997. In the following season you could safely hold the class as 14th. Nevertheless, he left the club after only two years to join the second division SD Compostela . With the Galicians, he clearly missed promotion, but got after a year (1999-2000) the chance to lead CD Numancia in the Primera División to keep it up.
Failure and break
For the 2000/2001 season, Goikoetxea signed on with Racing Santander , but could not avoid relegation to the Segunda División . Again he stayed in the first division, where he was able to lead the Madrid suburban club Rayo Vallecano to sovereign relegation.
Completely surprisingly, Goikoetxea withdrew from the football business until the 2004/2005 season. Then he took over UD Salamanca a second time , where he had started his coaching career. With the club now playing in the second division, he was passed into the third-class Segunda División B that season . Despite everything, he was allowed to take over CD Numancia , who had been relegated to the first division , and which he had also previously trained. After two unsuccessful attempts to get promoted again, he had to leave the club in 2007.
New goals
In the summer of 2007 Andoni Goikoetxea Olaskoaga came to Hércules CF with the aim of building something up in the long term and making the leap into the top division with the Alicantines. However, he was released after a year because the ascent was clearly missed. The club had previously initiated disciplinary proceedings against the coach because of critical statements, which were later dropped. From February 2013 to December 2014 he was the national coach of Equatorial Guinea .
