The Hércules Club de Fútbol SAD , commonly known in German-speaking countries as Hércules Alicante , is a Spanish football club from Alicante . The club was founded in 1922 and has played in Segunda División B since 2014 .

history

Squad for the 1935/36 season

The predecessor of the current club was founded in 1914 under the name Hércules Foot-ball Club , but the regional association Federación de Fútbol de Levante was only joined on September 26, 1922, which is why this is considered the club's founding date.

In the 1934/35 season, the greatest success up to that point was achieved, Hércules won the Segunda División and thus rose to the first division . In the 1935/36 season , the last before the outbreak of the civil war (1936-1939), you reached the sixth final rank. This placement could be repeated after the championship was resumed in 1939/40 . Until 1942, the Herculanos held themselves in the top division. In the following years, Hércules became an elevator team that played repeatedly for a short time in the Primera División, but was never able to establish itself.

The most successful era began in the 1970s under the presidency of José Rico Pérez . In the 1973/74 season they were promoted to the top division, the new club's own stadium, the Estadio José Rico Pérez , was inaugurated and the following season 1974/75 could be finished in fifth place, to this day the best league placement in the history of the club. They missed qualifying for the UEFA Cup this season only because of the poorer goal difference against the tied Real Sociedad . The club was able to establish itself permanently in the top division for the first time, only in 1982, after eight years in the Primera División , was relegated. In another brief period in the first division from 1984 to 1986 was followed by a deep fall into the third league, the Segunda División B . The club also got into economic difficulties and had to sell the stadium in 1994 to repay debt. Although able to 1996/97 again the climb up to the first class game, but then again followed by a crash into the Segunda B . Under the new main shareholder Enrique Ortiz , the economic reorganization and the slow rise of the association succeeded. In 2007 a new training center, the Campo de Entrenamiento de Fontcalent , was acquired and the Estadio José Rico Pérez also returned to the club's ownership. The 2009/10 season of the Segunda División was able to finish Hércules in second place and so rise again after 14 years in the Primera División . With the return to the highest Spanish league, a new building or a comprehensive renovation of the home stadium was discussed again. In the 2010/11 season , however, the club was directly relegated to the second division, after the 2013/14 season the club even had to relegate to the third division, the Segunda División B.
