Career

society

Royston Drenthe was born in Rotterdam in 1987 and grew up in the west of the city. He began his football career at the age of five at SC Neptunus , where he was discovered by a scout from Feyenoord Rotterdam . Then Drenthe went through all of Feyenoord's youth teams.

After playing first at Excelsior Rotterdam and then in the second team Feyenoords, Drenthe received a professional contract with the honorary division in November 2005 . He made his debut in the club's first team in January 2006 against Vitesse Arnhem . By the end of the 2005/06 season, in which Feyenoord finished third in the league, Drenthe played two more games.

Drenthe's first full season as a professional was the 2006/07 season , in which he finished seventh in the honor division with Feyenoord and played in the UEFA Cup . With 26 league games, this season is considered to be his sporting breakthrough year.

In the summer of 2007, Drenthe moved to Spanish club Real Madrid for 14 million euros , with whom he won the Primera División championship a year later . Drenthe made regular appearances at the Madrid club in the following years, but did not make the big breakthrough. For the 2010/11 season he was finally loaned to Hércules Alicante for a year . In the following season, Drenthe moved to Everton on loan shortly before the transfer ended. In the summer of 2012, his contract with Real Madrid expired.

In early February 2013, Drenthe signed a contract until the end of June 2016 with the Russian first division club Alania Wladikawkas , who at the time was the penultimate one in relegation.

In September 2014 Drenthe moved within the English second division from Reading FC on loan for six months to Sheffield Wednesday . Here he met his old friend Glenn Loovens , who like Drenthe comes from Rotterdam and also played for Feyenoord.

In January 2015 Drenthe moved to the Turkish Süper Lig to SAI Kayseri Erciyesspor and signed a contract for 2.5 years. He left this club again in the summer of 2015 and moved to Baniyas SC in the United Arab Emirates . In February 2016 he ended his career at the age of 28, but on the initiative of the new Sparta Rotterdam coach , Henk Fraser , joined the Dutch second division team on July 1, 2018, where he received a contract until the end of the season.

National team

In 2007 Drenthe was appointed to the Jong Oranje , the Netherlands' U-21 team . Under coach Foppe de Haan , he won the U-21 European Football Championship with the team in the same year . He acted during the European Championship as a left winger, who impressed with good actions in defense and shone with his advances. He was voted the best player of the tournament at this European Championship.

Drenthe was part of the squad for the 2008 Summer Olympics , where he reached the quarter-finals with his team.

On November 17, 2010, Drenthe made his debut in the national team when he came on for Rafael van der Vaart in the friendly against Turkey ten minutes from time.
